Media offers flooding in for Hicks

David Hicks's father suggests that his son should accept money to tell his story and worry about the legal consequences later.

Terry Hicks confirmed that up to 30 TV networks and publishers, from Australia and overseas, have made offers worth more than a million dollars for his son to tell his story about being detained in Guantanamo Bay.

Mr Hicks said that his son was not interested in the media offers, and was more focused on integrating back into society and studying to gain entrance into an ecology course.

One publishing offer is for Mr Hicks and David to co-author a book about their lives, Mr Hicks said.

Any decision by his son to accept payment for his story would have "legal implications that are quite huge", he said.

The payments would risk triggering federal and state proceeds of crime laws that were upgraded last year with David Hicks specifically in mind.

I'm surprised that the American media would be interested since they ignored the whole issue for so long, but he should definitely let people here and in other countries hear his story. It's just a shame that he's still looked at as a criminal and would have to forfeit his earnings from telling his story.
