Bill would make it illegal to feed the obese
Source: USA Today

Three legislators want to make it illegal for restaurants to serve obese customers in Mississippi.

House Bill No. 282, which was introduced this month, says: Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the State Department of Health after consultation with the Mississippi Council on Obesity Prevention and Management established under Section 41-101-1 or its successor. The State Department of Health shall prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese, and shall provide those materials to all food establishments to which this section applies. A food establishment shall be entitled to rely on the criteria for obesity in those written materials when determining whether or not it is allowed to serve food to any person.

The proposal would allow health inspectors to yank the permit from any restaurant that "repeatedly" feeds extremely overweight customers.

The bill, written by GOP Rep. W. T. Mayhall Jr., was referred to the Judiciary and Public Health committees, but The Jackson Free Press doesn't expect it to garner much support in the statehouse.

34. Well of course!
If 2/3rds of Mississippi is overweight, I'm sure that roughly applies to the legislators themselves. Kind of hard to get things passed when you just threatened 2/3rds of the legislature with no more all-you-can-eat BBQ lunches.

severely hurt the economy, if restaurants can't serve obese people. The article states:

So they would lose 2/3 of their business?

I can't imagine this will go over well. It would be interesting how they determine what, for the purposes of the law, is "obese". Furthermore what percentages of each restaurant's customers qualify? Might they end up going out of business rather quickly?

There are plenty of obese people: restaurant serves them, gets closed down; restaurants refuse to serve them, people stop going there, it loses money, goes out of business.

This is totally ridiculous. Talk about a nanny state!

on the one hand, freedom to do what one wants without government interference

On the other hand, is it aiding and abetting someone's eventual death to keep feeding the obese?

I can't make an opinion on it...and in the absence of that, I'd err on the side of freedom of choice.

Punishing them by refusing to server them food at all should be a no brainer that it's wrong, but then so is the discrimination.

149. But But But...
...that would put a HUGE dent in our economy. Dontcha know this country thrives on nutritional ignorance, obesity brings profit in so many areas. Fast food chains obviously, and as the posters before me noted it costs less to eat at McDonald's than to buy one piece of fruit. But also, the so-called "weight loss industry", the fashion magazines, and especially Big Pharma with their diabetes, cholestrol and blood-pressures drugs are all mining this ore and making big $$$$ out of it.

But not only that: think of how we're giving more money to Exxon, since overweight people need their cars, walking, cycling and public transpo doesn't work for them.

So what to do? Blame the victim: it's the great American way!

The way things are now, I'm shocked only 60% of Americans are overweight. Food is marketed so insidiously, it permeates every aspect of our lives, we should all be 700 lbs each!

150. You're absolutely right.
Disgusting, isn't it?

Reminds me of a case of child abuse I witnessed once a long time ago. A little boy misbehaved, so his grandma put him on a stool in front of the TV with cartoons on and ordered him not to look at it. Obviously he couldn't avoid peeking periodically, but every time he looked, she'd slap him.

Our "food service industry" does something very similar with its constant promotion of junk foods. Doctors say avoid the HFCS, refined starches, unhealthy fats, chemical additives, etc, but everything in our environment screams "eat this, it tastes so good!" Then, instead of slaps from grandma, we're punished with diabetes, coronary artery disease, and other related, life-destroying illnesses.

Next, the "health care industry" steps in to rob people blind with treatments and drugs they "need" to fix one problem at a time while causing yet others. And then people say, "it's their own fault for not taking responsiblity for their own health."

If that's not criminal abuse, I don't know what is.

151. It's all tied to the same lobbies and for-profit corporations as everything else!
The reason Americans know nothing about nutrition is because it's economically sound to keep us confused. So instead of educating us and giving us the real skinny (pun intended) on what we should eat, those in charge of our health obsfucate and throw up smoke screens. I remember one study published said we could eat something outrageous, like 50 eggs a week with no ill effects on our cholestrol. Only to find out that the very same study had been funded by a grant from the poultry industry. No conflict of interest there, right?

When nutrition is studied without a huge lobby trying to influence the results, then we can trust the findings. Till then, we have to treat it as we do any other information we regard as propaganda: do our own research. We on DU are very good at that, having seen thru the Bush Crime Family and all the fakery they've tried to shove down our throats. It should be easy with stuff that we literally shove down our own throats!

60. Wow
You know, I had some issues with my weight in the past, and I've still got a few extra vanity pounds... this is the last thing that is going to encourage anyone to lose weight. The whole myth that poor people shouldn't be fat is absurd. Of course they should, they can't afford the more expensive, healthier foods. Some of those people who are poor, also work two or three jobs and barely have time to eat at all. Burger King, Wendy's, dollar menu = fast, easy, cheap, and back to work. Maybe someone ought to eat the idiots that proposed this BS.

I'm no fan of fast food restaraunts and such, but this is insane. The mere fact that anyone at all could take this seriously is just... scary. Damn.

A smoking ban doesn't ban stores from selling tobacco products to smokers. It doesn't forbid smokers from smoking while non-smokers are permitted to continue to smoke. Nor does it forbid smokers from eating at restaurants.

75. Got your tinfoil?
Okay. If this were the leadup to a bizarro movie, I'd have the plot go like this...

In a world where Famine is on the way, an unavoidable Hunger on the horizon, a leader arises and does the only thing he can.

Make people love it.

Brave Hero, shouting from the top of a rusted combine, in a field of baked earth: Praise the Glory! All of us, ALL of us, still have clinging to our bodies the evidence of our selfishness and greed. Yes, you may look down on the man with the beer belly, the woman with the welfare hips, and rightly you say to them - you do more than damage your own heart, you damage the heart of your Nation! Do you imagine yourself an island? But all of us, each of us, can still do more and give more.

In your greed and in your weakness, you reached for the ice cream, the hamburgers, the Fluffernutter sandwiches! You wanted to do the right thing, to make yourself a strong cell in the national body, but your will was weak. But now... Fortune smiles, and dries up the sugar, the starch, the dairy cows. This is not a problem. This is Providence, helping all of us to shed the weight of self-indulgence! The invisible hand has come to support us and guide us in our national fast, that the body and spirit of the People will be strong again! To blessed hunger! To fortunate famine! To a beautiful, strong, healthy future!

126. It is for their own good
If you can put me in jail for vaporizing cannabis for my own health, you can certainly jail/deny food to people who are fat for thier own good. Now universal health care is not an option, but putting people in jail, revoking permits etc. is all encouraged in the battle for good health.

that is one reason why I am glad I left the States. the really sad thing is they will eventually succeed with stupid laws like this and then they will start catching on elsewhere in the world.

147. is this a sarcastic response to the proposed smoking ban?
The USA today article treats it like it is serious (stupid, but serious), but the Jackson Times article it links to completely blows by it.

The author and sponsors of the bill have to be trying to make some sort of point.

You can't go without eating.

You just know these bastards have severe behavior control problems in their lives somewhere, so they're taking it out on fat people.

Incidentally, anyone who seriously thinks this has ANYTHING to do with helping people has never met a fatophobe. Fat people can eat at home. These morons just want to persecute somebody and they can't openly do it to black people anymore.

160. Would you have to show proof of a metabolic disorder?
This is crazy.

This guy thinks that everybody that is fat eats way too much. He isn't a doctor and knows nothing about medicine and especially endocrinology.

There are millions of Americans with low thyroid disease. And most of them are undiagnosed and untreated. People with dead thyroids can die after a few years if they don't get their thyroid extract. And the drug companies are trying to stop the doctors from prescribiing the natural, cheap stuff that Armour sells -- it's a byproduct from the slaughterhouse made from dried animal glands -- but it's FAR more biologically effective than the expensive, synthetic stuff.

Even if you are being treated and take your thyroid pill everyday, you can exercise your butt off, eat right and still be obese.

More info:
www.stopthethyroidmadness.com

And that's just one of many metabolic problems people have.

AGGGHHH!! These idiots wouldn't know how to draft a law if they were gonna be shot! They think they can pass a law to solve every single problem out there.

162. In 100 years, medical science will feel horrible about how its treated fat people
We'll look back on this period like doctors do on the times when little people were banished for demon possession.
All bias evolves out of ignorance. This kind does, too.

Put a 200 pound person and a slender person on the same 2000 calorie a day with exercise plan - the fat person will
gain weight and the thin person will lose it. It has been shown time after time.

But these bigots enjoy their hatred too much to see the facts.
