Tallahassee, Florida – A spokesman for the Department of Children and Families was summarily fired Friday night following his arrest on charges of producing child pornography.

Al Zimmerman, DCF spokesman since March of 2005, was arrested in Lakeland and taken to the Hillsborough County jail for booking, authorities said.

Investigators said he solicited at least two victims between the ages of 16 and 17 to perform lewd acts which he used to create child pornography.

If convicted on all charges, Zimmerman could be sentenced to a maximum of 120 years in prison, McCollum said.

Zimmerman had one prior arrest, for obtaining property in return for worthless checks, in Tampa in 2003 when he worked as a reporter for Bay News 9.

1. Words can't express my disgust. Protect the children.
I cannot and will never understand child pornographers, but I sure as HELL don't want them employed by the state in any capacity. This is disgusting. His looks have nothing to do with it, but they are vile, I must admit.

11. FL long ago stole the "wackiest state" title from CA.
There must be something in the water down there to produce so many weirdos. Do we have a serious theory as to why this is? It can't really be weather-related, can it?

7. I find it difficult
to really consider it child porn when the so called victims are between 16 - 17.
Legally of course its child porn if he filmed it under the law but then again this is not the first time the law has been ass, does the name Genarlow Wilson ring any bells?

8. I have to agree here-16-17 year olds are teens not children.
I am not defending him if what he did was illegal and if he is in a position of trust over children or teens that isn't acceptable.

However the age of consent is low in some western countries-14 in Italy-15 in Germany-16 in the UK and Australia. You cannot call these boys children.

However a person should ALWAYS obey the laws and certainly when in positions of trust.

My objection to sensationalising these cases as "child" porn does no credit to real cases of child abuse.

10. Age of consent has nothing to do with it
This is about the age of majority. A model should be paid and waiver contracts signed. A person under the age of 18 is not old enough to sign a legally binding contract.

12. He listed governor Charlie Crist as a reference on his resume!
He made $75,000 a year, personnel records show. The records show he listed Gov. Charlie Crist, then the state attorney general, as a reference. The file also contained his Florida criminal history, which showed an arrest on fraudulent check writing charges.

13. Fucking hypocrites. Florida: “marriage protection” amendment will be on the Nov. ballot

Sigh. We were on a roll there with positive news about civil equality…

First there was the ruling by New York’s The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court that Canadian same-sex marriages must be recognized here. Kate and I married in Vancouver in 2004, so this was a big present.

Then, in Oregon, couples who wish to take advantage of the recently approved domestic partnership law may now do so as a federal judge tossed out a lawsuit attempting to prevent its implementation.

But it’s time to roll up the sleeves for folks in the Sunshine State as the fundies have collected enough signatures to put a “marriage protection” measure on the ballot there. (Florida Sun-Sentinel):
