McCain Tries To Assuage Conservatives
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 03:05 PM by FVZA_Colonel
Source: Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Republican John McCain is trying to ease long-standing distrust among the party's powerful conservatives. It will be a slow process.

"I believe that the majority of Republican Party conservatives are convinced that I'm best equipped to lead this country, unify our party and take on the challenge of radical Islamic extremism," McCain told reporters Saturday.

As Super Tuesday looms — and the possibility that McCain could all but wrap up the nomination — the chattering conservative class is in an uproar. Talk show host Rush Limbaugh has warned that McCain as standard-bearer would destroy the Republican Party. Author and pundit Ann Coulter, in jaw-dropping heresy, said she would campaign for Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton if McCain wins the party nod. Commentators Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin have come out in support of McCain's rival, Mitt Romney.

Surrogates for the former Massachuttsetts governor have claimed that McCain is outside the GOP mainstream.

And let us all hope that he fails in his little quest, and thus fails to get the Repug nomination.

2. What's really awesome is that he will have to run to the right
to try to shore up the base that's threatening to stay home, and in doing so, will not be able to run to the center to scoop up Indies and Dems as is traditional after the primary season. He's fucked. If we nominate Obama, it's all over for him.

3. We should have some tricks up our sleeves to undermine his conservative support
I'll stay mum about that for now.

4. The only way McCain can "assuage" conservatives is if he
puts Aqua Dots in their drinks, first.

5. Coulter for Clinton ...
>Author and pundit Ann Coulter, in jaw-dropping heresy, said she would campaign for Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton if McCain wins the party nod.

Oh yeah, like that's actually going to happen. I really would like to see her follow through with this.

Hey, maybe it's not too late for Pat Robertson or Pat Buchannan to stage a 3rd party candidacy. Actually, this may have been their year to win the nomination outright.

6. My Fundie Aunt Is Spewing McCain Hate Email at Me
So maybe McCain will be the REAL key to Democratic victory--although I suspect she'd support Huckabee, and not Romney (does anyone BESIDES W support Romney?)

9. "Some conservatives dislike McCain because he has worked to limit money in politics"
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 06:50 PM by brentspeak
"...efforts that critics believe are a violation of free speech."

Actually, McCain-Feingold has had only a negligible effect on the D.C. lobbying culture; and after it was signed into law, McCain himself hasn't done anything further to fight against the Beltway money culture.

But what kills me is the statement "Some conservatives dislike McCain because he has worked to limit money in politics..." There is nothing "conservative" about allowing money to influence American politics. If Barry Goldwater were alive, he'd be railing against the lobbyists and the politician whores who take their money.
