Maharishi Mahesh Yogi dies
Source: MSNBC

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a guru to the Beatles who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, has died at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop, a spokesman said Tuesday. He was thought to be 91 years old.

"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that the Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age."

Once dismissed as hippie mysticism, the Hindu practice of mind control that Maharishi taught, called transcendental meditation, gradually gained medical respectability.

He began teaching transcendental meditation in 1955 and brought the technique to the United States in 1959. But the movement really took off after the Beatles visited his ashram in India in 1968, although he had a famous falling out with the rock stars when he discovered them using drugs at his Himalayan retreat.

Being a creature of the Sixties (I'm 56), this is a blast from my past.

Have a pleasant journey, Maharishi.

6. Those damn not-we; when will they ever cease?
Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 07:19 PM by HypnoToad
Pity nobody put out that little revelation during the 1980s "war on drugs". Of course, how much would the advert makers have to pay the Beatles to do so? It's always about money.

Respect others' religions and ya might get further in life. (Even if the religion is money, but I submit AND digress...)

But, hell, Johnny kept saying he was bigger than Jesus - he'd spit on anybody if they didn't agree with him; arrogant little fart. I mean, if any of us went around saying we were better than Jesus or could put Muhammad in his place... ruh-roh...

My condolences to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's family and next of kin.

WRONG, WRONG AND TOTALLY WRONG. John made his comment in the vein of sarcasm that people cared more about The Beatles than Jesus which he thought was completely STUPID. He was misquoted and misaligned for years by people who didn't have the savvy to know what he meant. John Lennon was not an "arrogant little fart." You know NOTHING about the man! Please do NOT attribute that utter rubbish to him simply because YOU don't get it! This world was a better place when John Lennon was in it!

the passing of this man would make sense with a Solar Eclipse happening tomorrow. Throughout history, great kings, great sages, great gurus and the like always died on or around an eclipse.

15. Actually
his famous falling out with the Beatles had to do with the Maharishi supposedly hitting on Mia Farrow, who was part of the entourage.

21. Story a bit misleading
Cynthia Lennon stated that was the healthiest she had seen her husband in years. While at the ashram, Lennon was off drugs and alcohol, as were the other Beatles. Occasionally, a regular cigarette would come out and they had the feeling of "ditching" school to go out for a smoke. But that was the extent of the "drug" usage.

35. I thought the Maharishi was hitting on Mia's sister.
"Dear Prudence" on the White Album is about that incident. Maharishi was hitting on or possibly having an affair with Prudence Farrow, so the Beatles got disgusted with him because of that.

BTW, the Maharishi's meditations have probably helped many people, but he has started a company that sells Ayurvedic medical herbs, oils, teas, and such, at grossly inflated prices.

I don't think $15 or $20 for a normal box of 30 one-cupt tea bags is terribly fair.

28. Beatles guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi dies
Source: Yahoo

THE HAGUE (AFP) - The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a one-time spiritual advisor to the Beatles, has died in his Dutch home, his Transcendental Meditation movement announced Wednesday.

He died peacefully around Tuesday evening in his home in the tiny village of Vlodrop in the Netherlands where he had been living since 1990, it added.

Originally from India, the Maharishi started his worldwide movement in 1958. In the 1960s he attracted many followers including the Beatles who went to meditate with him in India in 1968.

The Beatles and the guru fell out during their visit, for various reasons. Ringo Starr reportedly objected to the vegetarian diet, while John Lennon felt that the Maharishi's claim to celibacy was a lie.
