Mahdi Army told to maintain truce

Muqtada al-Sadr, a populist Shia figure, has ordered his Mahdi Army to maintain its six-month ceasefire.
Members of the armed group had clashed with Iraqi and US soldiers on Thursday.

An al-Sadr spokesman, Salah al-Ubaidi, said the ceasefire, due to expire this month, should continue until the forces are told it is over.

Some members of al-Sadr's bloc are pressuring him not to extend the August 29 freeze on the group's activities, which has reduced the violence.
