Bush Signals Support for McCain
Source: Washington Post

With the race to succeed him reaching a critical juncture, President Bush this morning began rallying the Republican base around its presumptive nominee, John McCain, and in the process tried to define his own legacy for the general election campaign to come.

In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Bush offered an implicit endorsement of McCain's bona fides as a true conservative in the face of deep skepticism on the right. Although he did not mention McCain by name, the president said whoever ends up being the Republican nominee will represent conservative values.

"We have had good debates and soon we will have a nominee who will carry a conservative banner into this election and beyond," Bush said. "The stakes in November are high. . . . Prosperity and peace are in the balance. So with confidence in our vision and faith in our values, let us go forward, fight for victory and keep the White House in 2008."

5. Kiss of Death, perhaps?
In the figurative sense, of course.

One can hope.

8. I think McCain will fall apart on his own lack of virtues. Lock Bu$h up with toys and coloring books
When you have to move so far to the right just to shore up the base, it leaves McCain incredibly vulnerable to Democrats that will take advantage of his harder stances. Bu$h will have to be put in a room with a coloring book and a Thomas Train to keep him out of sight during this campaign. Btw, your legacy is one of disgrace and national embarassment, you'll be lucky not to be next to Andrew Johnson and Warren Harding as the worst President's ever.

9. I just went to his website
It's amazing how freepers perpetuate their own stereotypes!

I pulled up Obama's "issues" page alongside McCain's. Obama addresses real issues. McCain panders.

Hard to believe I really used to vote Republican.

14. I hope someone points out how the first bush campaign stooged
McCain in 1999. With phone calls in the south alleging an out of wedlock pregnancy with a black woman - the kid was adopted. Now McCain accepts bush's help after that - doesn't say much for McCain.

16. Bush Urges Conservatives to Rally Behind 2008 Nominee
Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — Although he did not explicitly mention Sen. John McCain, President Bush on Friday sought to unify the Republican Party behind its eventual nominee, describing the election of his successor as president as a stark ideological choice.

Mr. Bush’s remarks, delivered in an early morning speech to the Conservative Political Action Committee, presaged the role his aides said he would play all year: using the power of the presidency to shape the agenda and attack his Democratic critics.

“We have had good debates and soon we will have a nominee who will carry the conservative banner into this election and beyond,” Mr. Bush said to a boisterous audience. “Listen, the stakes in November are high. This is an important election. Prosperity and peace are in the balance.”

Although deeply unpopular, with an approval rating at historic lows below 30 percent, Mr. Bush enjoys strong support among conservatives like those gathered in the hotel ballroom in Washington where he spoke on Friday.

all the different factions of Republicans are so disgruntled. We can only hope he keeps opening his mouth in support of McCain. Perhaps it will keep some of those dumbasses home on election day.

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

WASHINGTON, DC–Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."

"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."

Bush swore to do "everything in power" to undo the damage wrought by Clinton's two terms in office, including selling off the national parks to developers, going into massive debt to develop expensive and impractical weapons technologies, and passing sweeping budget cuts that drive the mentally ill out of hospitals and onto the street.

During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.

20. This is the repayment for McCain's support in 2004

"The hug" came with strings attached, and Bushco is only too happy to let Old Grumpy succeed them to maintain their profit-driven war.
