PORTSMOUTH — Rochester physician Terry Bennett said he rented a city building to people who worked for Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign — and skipped town without paying the bill.

Making matters worse, Bennett said, the 3,000-square-foot building at 236 Union St. was left trashed. Campaign signs were left lying all over the place, he said.

"It's a very nice little building, with an 1,800-foot warehouse and the rest can be offices," Bennett said. "There's a full kitchen and bath. They used it as a campaign center and dormitory. I expected them to hand the Realtor a check as they left. They did not."

Bennett said he wanted to be fair. The tenants contacted him and said they wanted the building for five days before the New Hampshire primary, which was held Jan. 8.

was so intent on the public believing it, and Clinton, with all his charm as last president, couldn't make a dent in that story. media dug in and wouldn't be moved with the truth. Like they did with the Swifts and the less known Kerry.

Ok so I am not a big fan of Clinton, but having read this article in its entirety: a) the paper did not wait to hear from the Clinton campaign before publishing, which is borderline unethical; b) the above quote is ridiculous - a small army's trash fills two large garbage bags?; c) the building was rented for a grand total of 5 days.

The folks who rented this building ought to have picked up their garbage on the way out, and they certainly should pay their bills. A landlord who does a short term rental to anyone with no money up front is a fool. Calling them 'Clinton's staff', while technically true, is a massive exaggeration.

And the whole thing is ridiculous anyway. It's barely been 30 days since it happened... who knows if there's a check in the mail. Can you imagine the complexity of running a huge campaign like this? People forget, people get overlooked, and usually a phone call can clean everything up. The guy exaggerated so much in his interview that I find it extremely hard to believe that he doesn't simply WANT to hurt Clinton's campaign.

BTW, I'm an Obama supporter, but whoever is running ultimately will get my full support.

much as the Edwards campaign did to pay some of its vendors, including a video producer in New Orleans.

The said third party proceeded to stiff both the producer and Edwards. Unaware of this, a NOLA blogger who's friends with the producer picked the story up, then a DUer who reads his blog (me) picked it up, and as some of you may recall, all hell broke loose (at least by the standards of last fall :P ).

About a week later it was determined that the vendor, not Edwards, was to blame. Both the blogger and the DUer, in fact, ended up supporting Edwards. Not that I'm going to support Hillary if this turns out to be the case, mind you...
