Actor Danny Glover fined $100 for trespassing in Ontario
Source: CBC

An Ontario court has fined American actor and labour activist Danny Glover $100 following his conviction last month for trespassing in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Glover, 61, was found guilty for his role in a labour rally at the Sheraton on the Falls hotel in September 2006. He was supporting union leaders who were calling for improved salaries and working conditions for employees at the Sheraton and other hotels across North America.

Canadian Niagara Hotels sought $22,000 to cover the private prosecution of Glover and two other defendants. Labour activists Alex Dagg and Wayne Samuelson have also been fined $100 each for trespassing.

The justice of the peace Friday said the prosecution was unnecessary to protect the interests of the hotel's owner, and that the company should have put more effort toward good faith negotiations with the union.

2. Would Hope
That it gets thrown out.

Corporations don't own everything.

3. They sued for 22 grand, the court fined Danny 100 bucks, basically told the hotels to GFU

I don't think it is worth "fighting" this judgment.

Another judge might support the hotels, especially if our Harper sock-puppet decides to make it a political issue.

hmmmm?

4. But
He might not be allowed to enter the country again. It is a battle of nickel and dime ing, and the corporations control the rules.

5. I was just there on vacation a couple weeks back.
I won't go back soon if that's their gig. Thankfully I didn't stay at the Sheraton...

I will say that it's beautiful in the winter, though; we got a Falls view room for next to nothing ($300-$400 in summer season). Plus all the restaurants are easy to get into right about now. :-)

6. Kudos to Danny Glover! I wish more celebrities would get out there and support
the labor rights of the poor directly and visibly. The poor have no access to the corporate controlled media in the U.S. Glover is wonderful to lend his name and person to this cause.

And such a magnificent actor! Y'all see him in "Witness"? Wow! Playing a bad guy, in a small part, but wow! I'll never forget his toeing his way, in his fancy dress New York shoes, through the cow dung on the Amish farm, like a fussy little girl trying to keep her Easter shoes clean. It was just so...perfect!

7. Splendid actor, with a head in the right place, to boot
He was scary in "Shooter", a horrible rightwing survivalist anti-government movie, but brightened by Glover's performance. A total 180 from Glover's real personality.
