Bomb at Pakistan rally kills 14

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A suicide bomber struck Saturday at
an election rally in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least
14 people and wounding more than 20, officials said.

The blast occurred at a rally of the Awami National Party —
a secular, ethnic Pashtun group — in the town of Charsadda
in the turbulent North West Frontier province, where Islamic
extremists operate.

Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema put the death
toll at 14 with more than 20 injured.

"I think it was a suicide attack and very close to the stage,"
Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz said, adding that all party
leaders were safe.

Pakistani Taleban declare ceasefire: militants
(AFP)

6 February 2008

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A Pakistani Taleban commander accused of orchestrating the murder of Benazir Bhutto has declared a ceasefire with government forces, a militant spokesman said Wednesday.

Militant leader Baitullah Mehsud had ordered an ‘indefinite’ truce following months of clashes in the tribal region of South Waziristan and neighbouring regions, said spokesman Maulvi Omar.

‘‘We have announced ceasefire for an indefinite period because the government stopped attacking us,’ Omar, the spokesman for Tehreek-e-Taleban (Taleban Movement) Pakistan, told AFP by telephone.
