World bourses lost 5.2 trillion dlrs in January: credit rater
Source: AFP

PARIS (AFP) - World stockmarkets lost 5.2 trillion dollars (3.6 trillion euros) in January thanks to the fallout from the US subprime crisis and fears of a global economic slowdown, Standard & Poor's said Saturday.

"If investors thought the market could only go up, January's wake-up call pulled them back into reality," the independent credit ratings' provider said.

Standard & Poor's said the world's equity markets lost a combined 5.2 trillion dollars as emerging markets fell 12.44 percent and developed markets lost 7.83 percent to register one of the worst starts to a new year.

"There were few safe havens in January as 50 of the 52 global equity markets ended the month in negative territory, with 25 of them posting double-digit losses," said Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&Ps.

1. It put what I lost into perspective
that's for sure, but it was only paper profit. I'm sure I'll lose more by the time Stupid is out of office, maybe half of what I had at the peak of the Dow.

The income won't change, though. My dad was a very defensive investor who was all too aware of the nasty things paper prices could do in a very short time.

The only change will be in my ability to leverage debt, something I find anathema and won't be doing for a very long time.

3. Thanks to globalization you probably lost less. But Globalization
is what the big time investors wanted because the USA can just become the third world mecca they want and they can still make money.
I made bucks on APU and wish I had not sold it. The dividend is very high 7 Percent now, and was 10 when I sold. It is tax deferred and is a USA business. It is propane.

The very rich have rigged things with globalization that regular investors have to invest in the global market against the interest of their own country. They have contaminated everyone who is middle class and better against the interest of our country. How I hate them.

6. I've lost a lot less, percentage wise, than the markets as a whole
but still, for somebody who used to live on $800/month with a mortgage taking the first $560, it's amazing to lose that much on paper in one month.

4. Why don't people remember that when the RePIGs get in ordinary
people always lose money in some kind of rip off? Is it the media? Or are Americans dumber than door knobs?
