Illegal emigres defy the image (Fastest growing source? India)
Source: (San Jose) Mercury News

(snip)

Turning stereotypes on their head, a recent federal analysis of unauthorized immigration says the most rapidly growing source of illegal immigration is India - the same country whose engineers and programmers help power Google and other Silicon Valley companies, whose doctors heal the Bay Area's sick, and whose entrepreneurs and venture capitalists have become a force on both sides of the international date line.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimates that there are 270,000 unauthorized Indian natives in the United States - a 125 percent jump since 2000, the largest percentage increase of any nation with more than 100,000 illegal immigrants in the United States.

The number of undocumented Indians is dwarfed by the estimated 6.6 million illegal residents from Mexico, according to the estimates from homeland security's Office of Immigration Statistics. Yet, considering the high level of education of many Indians, immigration experts say the federal report hints at a new phenomenon: a high-skilled undocumented workforce to go along with the nation's sizable numbers of low-skilled illegal workers.

If trends continue, within three years India would trail only Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala as a source of illegal immigration. Another national immigration expert, Jeffrey S. Passel of the Pew Hispanic Center, estimates that the number of illegal Indians is even higher, at 400,000 people.

1. Praise God that they don't speak Spanish!
Otherwise we'd be screwn. Sure I can't hardly understand Indian English, but it's English, just like God intended people to speak, just like my bible.

2. I'll bet they come through Canada too, just like other
undocumented workers from countries that were once part of the British Empire. Since Canada allows commonwealth country nationals to immigrate to Canada, it's only a hop over the mostly loosely manned border on the American side for them to enter. This is why all the hoopla about building fences and getting Minutemen vigilantes to man the south border to keep the aliens out makes me laugh. Hey, they are coming in the back door!

3. The Indians come in with visas
(from the article)

Virtually all entered the United States legally but violated the terms of their visas, say experts who study the nation's much maligned immigration system.

"How do you get in? You come across the border, or you arrive here with a visa," said Lindsay Lowell, policy director for the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University. "Indians aren't going to be walking across the border like Mexicans."

5. That's how most of the Europeans coming through Canada
come in as well with visitor's visas. As a matter of fact, the reason we are in this frenzy of border patrol, is partly because of 9-11 but those guys came in on student visas and visitors visas as well. Many Mexicans do the same. The ones who cross without visas are the ones who couldn't get a visitor's visa in Mexico for various reasons. I worked with an Mexican illegal alien in a restaurant in Southern California once (back before it was illegal to hire them) who used to fly down to visit his family, pick up another visitor's visa and fly back to his job with no problems.

7. I'm actually for open borders.
We can't stop people from coming in here but maybe when they come and see what a shithole BushCo has turned America into, they might go somewhere else. Making them legal though and competing fairly for jobs will go a long way in keeping employers from exploiting them and maybe it will stop the flow when the jobs aren't so plentiful after Americans take the jobs because the pay is something that they will work for.

8. Some may come from Canada
but I doubt it is near the 10,000+ a day coming across the southern border.

10. I don't think 10,000 a day are entering illegally through the
southern border. I mean how are they counted if they are sneaking across? Do they sign up somewhere? Do they say present when called upon? Please put up your source if it is a valid one, not some right wing BS put up by the Minutemen or other White Supremist groups.

12. Look it up yourself
The border patrol catches more than 1000 a day in the Tucson sector alone and estimate they catch about 10% of those attempting to cross. You can try and minimize the impact if you choose.

14. Having watched at the Nogales border for hours; your statistics, regardless of where they
originated, were pulled out of someone's ass.

Do you believe the jobless rates and economic indicators of this government too?

15. Wow!!! You watched the Nogales border for hours.
The illegals are coming in thru Sasabe, Naco and other points away from the port of entry.
Your reply came out of your ass. Refute it with statistics or admit you're another open border advocate.
