Dodd to Endorse Obama
Source: Hartford Courant

The last-minute postponement of a prominent Senate hearing may have received an explanation tonight. Sen. Chris Dodd won't be able to chair his banking, housing and urban affairs committee in the morning because he'll be campaigning for Barack Obama.

The Connecticut senator is announcing his Obama endorsement in Ohio, according to sources close to Dodd. (You can read more about it in this morning's Courant or at www.courant.com.) He's the first in the pool of former Democratic presidential candidates to jump headlong into one of the final two campaigns.

Dodd was going to lead a Tuesday morning hearing with the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but it has been postponed to March 10. So his return to serious Senate work may be temporarily on hold for another episode of Chris Dodd, Vote Hunter.

1. BOOM!
Good news for Barack. I think Clinton will counter with Richardson, so there'll just be more brinksmanship until we get to Biden, then EDWARDS.

I doubt Richardson would go for Clinton at this point. If he was going to go with Clinton he would have done it probably right after the Kennedy endorsement. I think he has been waiting for this to play out so he could get a foot in for the VP slot. In the next week its going to be a landslide of Obama endorsements/super delegates while Clinton's numbers continue to slip.

30. politely, I do not think Richardson is a very good choice, he was incredibly boring and mumbling in
debate after debate. I had friends who I asked to watch a couple of the debates tell me that he was the most unprepared acting of all of them, and seemed to drag on and on and on and on with his comments about "when I was...".

I'd rather see Biden, Boxer, Dodd, Clark or Edwards.

32. I agree that he was not impressive in the debates,
but his extensive diplomatic and foreign affairs experience would counter Obama's weakness in that area. It also does not hurt that Richardson is hispanic.

41. I agree
Not only that if I were Obama I would be looking for a very talented woman govenor to balance the ticket. It would also be the ultimate payback to Hillary for prolonging a campaign into Huckabee time.

Senator Dodd is one of the few Democrats holding the line at our request. It helps to have someone endorsing you that actually listens to the American people.

11. Hello, President-Elect Barack Obama!
In the latest New York Times/CBS News poll of national voting preferences, Barack Obama bests his rival Hillary Clinton by a commanding 16 points.

For the first time, Barack Obama has moved ahead of Hillary Clinton nationally, with 54 percent of Democratic primary voters saying they wanted to see him nominated, while 38 percent preferred Mrs. Clinton.

A new USA Today/Gallup Poll released Monday showed a similar result, 51 percent for Mr. Obama to 39 percent for Mrs. Clinton.

that Hillary will have no choice but to see the futility of continuing.

I certainly hope so.

13. Excellent news for the Country & Constitution
This endorsement is great news!

Senator Dodd is a wonderfully dogged defender of Constitutional liberties that I even dare hope that he and Senator Obama had a few conversations about rescuing the Bill of Rights in advance of this announcement.

Gobama!

17. I'm with OBAMA----> BUT here is the rub...
The GOP and their flunky bloggers are bringing up again the CLINTON-OBAMA fighting.

They have SUCCEEDED in getting the sparring to a point where it could have an effect on CROSS-OVER
voting, hold-outs, creating ill will.

As an EDWARDS fan, who has lost my candidate......

MY PLEDGE.... I WILL SUPPORT WHOLE-HEARTEDLY AND WITH ENERGY THE WINNER OF THE PRIMARY

To the best of my ability the Democrats will win the election BY LEARNING TO UNITE

18. He just takes off work? Doesn't he have a job?
Is there no important work in Congress that he should be there for?

Heck, let's all take the day off. Who should we endorse?

If we paid Congress by attendance we would save a lot of tax money.

23. Here is Dodds Email to his emaillist

I received this today from Dodd:

-------------------------------------------------
We have been through a lot in this past year and your friendship and support have meant so much to me. That is why I wanted to let you know of my decision to endorse a Democratic candidate for President - and that I have decided to support Barack Obama.

We all understand how much is at stake in this election and that it is more important than ever that we put a Democrat in the White House.

And while both of our Party's remaining candidates are extremely talented and would make excellent commanders-in-chief, I am throwing my support to the candidate who I believe will open the most eyes to our shared Democratic vision.

I'm deeply proud to be the first 2008 Democratic presidential candidate to endorse Barack Obama. He is ready to be President. And I am ready to support him - to work with him and for him and help elect him our 44th President.

Put simply, I believe Barack Obama is uniquely qualified to help us face this housing crisis, create good jobs, strengthen America's families in this 21st century global economy, unite the world against terrorism and end the war in Iraq - and perhaps most importantly, call the American people to shared service and sacrifice. In this campaign, he has drawn millions of voters into politics for the first time in their lives and shown us that we are united by so much more than that which divides us.

That is why I believe the time has come for Democrats to come together as a Party and focus on winning the general election. The stakes are too high not to.

The last seven years have been as difficult as any I can remember. More than ever, we need a President who will inspire us to take part in the political process and change our country's path.

Today, when we need it most, we are hearing a new call from Barack Obama. And I hope you, like me, will answer it in the affirmative.

Please get involved in Barack Obama's campaign now: http://action.barackobama.com/doddsupporters

Sincerely,

Chris Dodd

45. Dodd is tremendous and a great asset to our party, but my point has nothing to do with Superdelegate
Governors have actual infrastructure in states that are still in contention. It makes a big political difference to have a gubernatorial endorsement because when your in a contest like this you need to have every edge you can get. No politician is more in touch with the states Democrats than the Governor and state leaders. Charlie Crist pulled McCain over the Repuke finish line in Florida for example. Hillary GREATLY benefits from having Ohio's Governor on her side. It makes a tremendous difference on the ground in each state.

Edwards endorsement is the one that will grab the most media attention, not to mention Edwards had a HUGE amount of support with a broad scope of Democrat voters. That is a slice of the pie BOTH candidates would walk on coals to get. Getting back to my supposed lack of understanding of the fine Chris Dodd: I am the first one to respect, understand, and admire the things that Chris Dodd stands for. He has been a Democrat standard bearer for decades. He is a man Ct. can be proud of and will probably heavily honor when his service is up. I'm too tired to type all the things that Dodd has given to our nation, so if you know the facts, you already know what I have to say about that.
