Still No Upgrade for White House E-Mail
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House still has not finished work on a new records management and e-mail archiving system, a project that began nearly five years ago.

The status of the electronic records system is detailed in testimony scheduled for delivery Tuesday to a House committee investigating whether millions of White House e-mails have disappeared.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is looking into information from a White House-prepared chart from several years ago that indicates e-mail was not archived in various White House units for 473 days over a period of 20 months.

A search for the e-mail has been under way for months. A senior administration official said Monday night that officials believe they have message information "for a substantial number of those component days."

"We believe that our current archiving system is adequate. It is substantially automated, but it can be improved," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The official said he was not authorized to speak on the record before the congressional hearing.

1. Not to worry: Telecoms are, more than likely, archiving.
And will continue to do so until they get their immunity. There's a reason bush looks scared shit-less when yammering about what he insists Congress has to do. Telecoms probably have cheney and bush by the balls.

3. I believe they use servers and are tranmitted via Telecoms
That is why all my web browsing and emails are available to the NAS, isn't it?

12. All the gov. agencies have their own "servers" and "email systems"
They just get the Internet Access from the carriers, mostly AT&T and Verizon...although different federal agencies can sign their own contracts...

I.E. the RNC email accounts...

11. Not the WH e-mails They are in house and by law,

are supposed to archived except, oops! The WH (Rove) lost 17,000 of them on the RNC servers. Oops!

And now they can't find them. :eyes: Well, they aren't sure, actually, because the cronie that they
have (the network admin.) didn't bother to start looking for them until 2006 after it was requested
in 2002! But, fear not! She's "working on it!" :eyes: (It's called 'stalling)& She's almost in Phase Two!
Waxman said at that rate? She'd be old and retiring before she was finished!!

18. If they're sending emails to the outside this person is right.
As far as the email archiving, I haven't seen an email server that couldn't do backups in my history as a sys admin - 15 years.

No server admin is going to believe that.

Analysis Details Missing White House E-mails

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 26, 2008; 4:12 PM

A 2005 technical analysis found that up to 1,000 days of
e-mails were missing from White House servers during a 2-1/2
year period, amounting to more than 1 million separate e-mail
messages, according to statements from a former White House
technology manager released today.

Steven McDevitt also said in written answers to questions
from a House committee that the White House's e-mail system
was so "primitive" that there was a high risk that data would
be lost.

McDevitt, who formerly oversaw many of the White House's
computer systems, said he oversaw a wide-ranging study that
found e-mail missing for hundreds of days from January 2003
through August 2005. He also told the House Oversight and
Government Reform Committee that security was so lax that
e-mail could be modified by anyone on the computer network
until the middle of 2005.

The statements from McDevitt, which were released during a
hearing today by Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.),
provide further details into the problems that have plagued
the White House e-mail system throughout the Bush
administration.
