Bush: Hard for Republicans to win African-Americans’ votes
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON - Republicans have historically had a tough time winning the votes of African Americans — and will have to do a lot of work to win them over this election year, outgoing President George W. Bush says.

“The Republican candidate is going to have to, one, show heart, two, explain why policies will make a difference in the lives of the African-American citizen,” Bush said in an interview with American Urban Radio Networks. “We’ve got a lot of hard work to do.”

He acknowledged that rival Democrats have been successful at winning the black vote — noting that he got “whomped pretty significantly” in his campaigns — and chastised his party for not doing enough to compete for it.

“My attitude is that at the very minimum there ought to be competition at least for votes, people shouldn’t take your vote for granted,” Bush said. “But in order for there to be competition, the party’s got to have what I used to call compassionate conservative agenda.”

2. The Republican Party in general is unfriendly, if not outright hostile, to ALL minorities
It is the last refuge of the Good Ol' Boys Club. If they crack 5% in the African-American vote this fall, I'd be shocked.

10. Lying piece of shit! Compassionate conservative is an oxymoron.
It's only words, means nothing, most people are smart enough to know that by now. The only reason the right regrets not having African American votes is because they are going to lose power to rip off the treasury for a while now.

11. Republicans had all the black vote until they sold us out, like hispanics and christian conservative
voters who are beginning to realize that the Republican party does not care about them. Please read this informative dkos diary on the subject, entitled: Why Lincoln's GOP abandoned Blacks to Jim Crow.

12. Making A Difference?
Well, that shouldn't be too hard to prove. Republican policies *have* indeed 'made a difference in the lives of African-American citizens.' A difference for the worst...just as for every other group, except for the obscenely-wealthy.

have a problem convincing African American people that they're on the same side?

Can't imagine.

14. The Racist DixieCrats became Republicans in the 70's: Now they rule that party..
So our Democrat Party is inclusive and better off without them. Repukes have to suffer with the stench of (not always) hidden racism and hostility towards minorities. The only way to fix it is to not pander but to bring up quality ideas, but I don't think that will EVER happen!

every February and any other occasion when it is politically expedient, and it's still not enough to fool people? I'm shocked.

is that they're constantly trying to prove him wrong about not being able to fool all of the people all of the time
