Evangelical leader helps McCain woo conservatives
Source: Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO — A prominent evangelical leader on Wednesday endorsed likely Republican presidential nominee John McCain as he tries to shore up his support among a powerful bloc that has responded tepidly to him so far.

Citing the candidate's anti-abortion voting record and his support of Israel, the Rev. John Hagee, a televangelist and pastor of the 17,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, said at a news conference that "John McCain is a man of principle."

Hagee is a leader among Christian Zionists and has argued vigorously from the pulpit and in writing for Israel's right to settle disputed territories.

His endorsement of McCain follows grumbling among other conservative Christian leaders who have suggested possibly running a third-party candidate because of continuing discontent with McCain. Some hope that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist pastor, might still mount an improbable comeback.

McCain said he respects Huckabee's desire to stay in the race and has not considered a running mate as a result.

I believe McCain is actually worried about losing (face in) Texas to Huckabee.

The last polling I saw had Huckabee polling 41% to McCain's 45%.

1. Well, if he is a powerful evangelical leader
He's bound to have some nasty skeletons in the closet, so this could be good for Huckabee.

5. The IRS needs to investigate this church and revoke their tax exempt status.

The IRS could always admit that their investigation of Obama's church because of his speech there is politically motivated. Ironically enough the campaign law the church violated by endorsing Mc Cain was written by Mc Cain.

6. AP misspelled Hagee's quote...
it should read:
"John McCain is a man of principal."
