Several fire departments respond to blast, fire on Grand Avenue

February 28, 2008
NEWS-SUN STAFF REPORT
WAUKEGAN -- Firefighters from several departments were battling what appeared to be an explosion and fire at 1926 Grand Ave., a shopping plaza home to Tuxedo World, Cleopatra’s Unisex Hair Salon, Cellular Concepts and a travel agency. Authorities reported there are injuries.

Authorities have closed Grand Avenue between Martin and Lewis avenues and crews from People’s Gas are on the scene because firefighters fear a gas leak.

16. Looks like it was terrah-ism!
Megdi Hussain, 29, who owns a dollar store across the street, said he heard an explosion at about 12:30 p.m., and the windows of his store simultaneously blew out.

It's another Hussein! Or Hussain! Ay-rabs! Moose-limbs! OMFG!!!! Terrah!

18. From what I understand, a gas explosion like that snuffs itself out pretty quickly.

23. Waukegan and Lyon explosions: a whole lot of "coincidences"
There's a posting at Rigorous Intuition that finds a lot in common between today's two blasts.

Two shopping area explosions today.

One in Lyon, France, 12:30 PM GMT. in a shopping area. There'd been a gas leak, it is felt that workers may have punctured the pipe, setting off the blast.

http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL28648448

Other in a mall at Waukegan, Illinois, believed to be a gas explosion, 6:30 PM GMT.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-waukegan-explosion-webfeb29,0,7829128.story

Half past the hour, shopping area, believed to be gas.

Lyon

41.23 N latitude, former hill fort

Lyon was founded as a Roman colony in 43 BCE by Munatius Plancus, a lieutenant of Caesar, on the site of a Gaulish hill-fort settlement called Lugdunon—from the Celtic sun god Lugus ('Light', cognate with Old Irish Lugh, Modern Irish Lú) and dúnon (hill-fort). Lyon was first named Lugdunum meaning the "hill of lights" or "the hill of crows". Lug was equated by the Romans to Mercury.

Lyon is the préfecture (capital) of the Rhône département, and also the capital of the Rhône-Alpes région.

Waukegan

42.22 N. latitude, former fort

Waukegan, first visited by Pere Marquette in 1673, is one of the oldest communities in Illinois. The city started as a French trading post and Potawatomi Indian settlement known as "Little Fort". Records dating back to 1829 tell of a treaty signed by the Potawatomis in which they ceded all of their land in this area to the Federal Government.

Little Fort became the County Seat of Government in 1841 by virture of its population, replacing Libertyville

Latitude, fort, center of area government

http://www.rigorousintuition.ca/board/viewtopic.php?t=16426

So the Waukegan and Lyon explosions share this: both happened at half past the hour on the same day, in a shopping area, were believed to be a gas explosion, are within one degree of latitude of each other, were towns that started out as forts, and are a center of area government.

That's pretty strange.
