White House column was copied
Source: Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette

A Fort Wayne native and White House official acknowledged Friday he copied large portions of an essay that appeared in a Dartmouth College publication and presented them as his own in a News-Sentinel column.

“It is true,” Tim Goeglein wrote to The Journal Gazette in an e-mail. “I am entirely at fault. It was wrong of me. There are no excuses.”

... Goeglein has worked in the Bush White House since 2001. He formerly worked for then-Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind.

The News-Sentinel removed Goeglein’s column from its Web site Friday morning.

7. I had a book review lifted almost to the point of cut and paste by a large and prestigious
history journal several years ago. Mine appeared 6 months before the call for a reviewer for the second journal even came out.
My only comments were to my advisors when I sent them mine and his. To the second reviewer I merely e-mailed him a copy of mine with the date and said, "I liked my first version better a year ago."
He did not reply! When asked if I would call him on it, I merely said, "No, let him stew for a good long while thinking that I might."
Let us just say that somehow one of my advisors made sure that their star of minority Southern religious experience wasn't as "original" as he thought.
The next year, my review in the first small journal came out pre-publication. A year later, oddly, the reviewer of the large prestigious journal happened to find exactly the same exact points to review and even the same errata as did I. Now, there is coincidence, and then there is improbable coincidence. Same e-mail to author with same result: ignoring.
Moral of story: people recognize their own words and some people even remember that they have read something very similiar before. . .
As my grandmother says, "Beware, lest your sins find you out."

8. Tim Goeglein, the official White House liasion to religious groups?
Mr. Goeglein, a slender, pink-cheeked 40-year-old Midwesterner who looks about half his age, is the official White House liaison to conservatives and to Christian groups. He is Mr. Rove's legman on the right.

''He is a constant set of eyes and ears,'' said Edwin J. Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation. Mr. Feulner said he saw Mr. Goeglein two or three times a week at meals, meetings or social events. ''If I have a message I want to get to Rove or the administration, I will scribble out a note to Tim, and within 24 hours I will get a response back. For lots of things, he is sort of one-stop shopping for a point of access to the administration.''

Christian conservatives, in particular, say that Mr. Goeglein (pronounced GAIG-line) has been an important conduit to the White House for their demands that Mr. Bush stop financing family planning groups that support abortion, heavily publicize a signing of anti-abortion legislation, block stem-cell research and oppose same-sex marriage -- all calls that the president has heeded.

9. UPDATE: Newspaper finds even more plagiarism by Goeglein
http://www.newssentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080229/NEWS02/802290342/1001

Timothy S. Goeglein, former Fort Wayne resident and now a special assistant to President George Bush, has been accused of plagiarism over a guest column about education The News-Sentinel published on our editorial page on Thursday.

Goeglein has admitted that portions of the column were used from another source without attribution. He has apologized to the editors of The News-Sentinel and also said there may be other previous columns he has written for The News-Sentinel that also may contain plagiarized material. We have found material in at least two other previous guest columns lifted from other sources without attribution and are continuing to check other previous submissions.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2005/04/11/LI2005041100879.html

Nall wrote in her blog that reading the column in yesterday's paper by Goeglein, "a name jumped out at me -- 'Eugene Rosenstock-Hussey,' described as a 'notable professor of philosophy at Dartmouth.' . . . This name was so goofy, just for the hell of it, I Googled it. And look what I found."

What she found were long passages apparently taken almost word for word from a 1998 article in the Dartmouth Review by Hart.

Since then, one of her readers found passages in Goeglein's Nov. 5 column about Hoagy Carmichael that appears lifted from a Jonathan Yardley essay published in The Washington Post on Sept. 3.

Another reader found Goeglein's July 23 column on John Wayne's centenary containing passages from an article by Bruce Bennett published in the New York Sun on June 20. That same reader then found similarities between Goeglein's July 5 column and an article by Robert R. Reilly published in Crisis Magazine on June 13.
