DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp. (GM) and Chrysler LLC are beginning to feel a pinch on vehicle production as labor strikes at two suppliers cause a shortage of parts at some key plants.
GM said Friday it will idle three pickup truck factories - in Fort Wayne, Ind.; Flint, Mich.; and Oshawa, Ontario - due to a shortage of parts from American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. (AXL). That follows GM's production halt at its pickup plant in Pontiac, Mich., earlier in the week. The four plants employ about 12,000 workers.
The United Auto Workers union struck American Axle plants in Michigan and New York on Tuesday after the sides failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.
Meantime, Chrysler has shut down production at its Windsor, Ontario, minivan plant due to a strike at supplier TRW Automotive Inc. (TRW), which supplies suspension systems for use in the minivans. The Canadian Auto Workers walked off the job at a nearby TRW facility on Thursday.
