Vanity Fair: Bush approved plot to oust Hamas
Source: JPost

US President George W. Bush is said to have approved a covert initiative to overthrow the Hamas government shortly after Hamas won the January 2006 parliamentary election, according to confidential documents obtained by Vanity Fair magazine.

The documents, which have been corroborated by sources at the US State Department and Palestinian officials, reveal that the plan was supposed to be implemented by the State Department.

The report confirms allegations by Hamas and other Palestinians that the US has been supplying Fatah with weapons and money so that its forces could bring down the Hamas government. Some senior Fatah officials have also accused the US of "meddling" in Palestinian affairs by encouraging Fatah to work toward toppling the Hamas government.

The magazine said that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams were entrusted with provoking a Palestinian civil war, in which forces led by Fatah strongman Muhammad Dahlan - fortified with new weapons supplied at America's behest - would remove the democratically elected, Hamas-led government.

...

Meanwhile, the magazine said, US officials led by Rice had spent several months begging Arab governments for money in order to supply Fatah's forces with new weapons from Egypt under a previously undisclosed covert US program - a scheme described by some sources as "Iran-Contra 2."

5. Yup, Bush's democracy lite. We support elections unless
they vote in people we don't want. Then it's support for covert ousting of democratically elected governments. It is supporting the veneer of democracy, and resorting to thuggery if they don't get what they want.
Changing political systems and institutions can be rocky and unpredictable. These Neocons are long on ideology and short on patience. You'd think they'd know that to enact the wholesale changes they want would require patience, tolerance, and diplomacy.
And how is Eliot Abrams, who was convicted of lying to Congress in Iran Contra I, still able to be put in charge of Iran Contra II? It's the same retreads pulling the same illegal, unethical stuff in the name of the U.S. of A.

7. Its proves one thing for sure
I knew that the U.S government was out of control the day Clinton bombed Yugolavia which also had a democratically elected government, so I am not surprised that Bush is doing this now. All the crap about supporting democracy around the world just goes out the window when you put fascists in charge.

14. Sadly, this is
like adding fuel to a roaring fire. I mean, the way the US treats the Palestinians vs our treatment of the Israelis is repugnant. This in turns causes more hatred and feud between these people (the Palestinians are upset, and sometimes, I'd say rightly so, about the influence and power America is exerting against them)and is IMO damaging to not only those in the holy land, but just as detrimental to America. Well..hell, that is what Bush wants anyways.

First the Israelis won't allow Hamas on the ballot, seeing as how they're a terrorist organization and all (many European countries ban terrorist groups from running in elections as well).

Then Bush** pressures prevails upon the Israelis to let the terrorists run, spouting blather about "the full exercise of democracy" or some such claptrap.

Then, after the election doesn't go Bush**'s way, since there's no Supreme Court over there, he decides to overthrow the newly democratically elected government by force?! :eyes:

The truly amazing thing is that this is being reprinted in the Jerusalem Post, a reliable RW mouthpiece if ever there was one.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080112/NATION/942901320/1001

Earlier, Mr. Bush visited the Sea of Galilee and saw where the Bible says Jesus walked on water and calmed a storm, and the president accepted from nuns at the Church of the Beatitudes a plaque that bore a line from the famous sermon: "Blessed are those who are peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

39. Welcome to the New American Century
Where American corporate dollars finance mass murder, oppression and starvation of innocents. American leaders lie with impunity to start wars, destroy non-threatening nations and kill their children. American leaders back Israel's killing sprees and even help plan and arm them...Obama and Clinton both fall all over themselves as they try to outdo each other in professing their love for all things Israeli. The killing, maiming and starving of Palestinian children mean nothing to them. You got Cunt-that-lies-alot Rice playing concerned ambassador when she is really just helping Israel kill more women and children. You got Chrisitian Crazies pushing wars and killing and bombing. Bush and Cheney ready to drop nukes on Iran while they pillage Iraq's oil.

Yep...that PNAC plan is working out just fine.

42. "Kill A Hundred Turks And Rest…"
If you cared to read the Vanity Fair article you might want to read Uri Avnery's take on it ...

snippity
This week, a shocking document was published: David Rose's article in Vanity Fair. It describes how US officials have in recent years dictated every single step of the Palestinian leadership, down to the most minute detail. Though the article does not touch the Israeli-American relationship (in itself a surprising omission) it goes without saying that the American course, including the smallest items, is coordinated with the Israeli government.
Why shocking? These things were already known, in general terms. In this respect, that article held no surprises: (a) The Americans ordered Mahmoud Abbas to hold parliamentary elections, in order to present Bush as bringing democracy to the Middle East. (b) Hamas won a surprise victory. (c) The Americans imposed a boycott on the Palestinians, in order to nullify the election results. (d) Abbas diverted for a moment from the policy dictated to him and, under Saudi auspices (and pressure), made an agreement with Hamas, (e) The Americans put an end to this and compelled Abbas to turn over all security services to Muhammad Dahlan, whom they had chosen for the role of strongman in Palestine, (f) The Americans provided plenty of money and arms to Dahlan, trained his men and ordered him to carry out a military coup against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, (g) The elected Hamas government forestalled the move and itself carried out an armed counter-coup.
All this was known before. What is new is that the mixture of news, rumors and intelligent guesses has now condensed into an authoritative, well substantiated report, based on official US documents. It testifies to the abysmal American ignorance, which trumps even Israeli ignorance, of the internal Palestinian processes.
George Bush, Condoleezza Rice, the Zionist neocon Elliott Abrams and the assortment of American generals innocent of any knowledge are competing with Ehud Olmert, Tzipi Livni, Ehud Barak and our own assorted generals, whose understanding reaches as far as the end of the gun barrels of their tanks.
snip snip snip
