Ecuador's security minister proposes multilateral force to patrol Colombian border

Ecuador's security minister on Tuesday proposed setting up a multilateral peace-keeping force to police Colombia's border if the country is unable to patrol it by itself.

Speaking to the nation's Constituent Assembly, the minister, Gustavo Larrea, said Colombia has no military garrisons to guard its border with Ecuador, the hideout of rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

"Our proposal to the international community, the Organization of American States and the United Nations is this: if Colombia cannot police its borders, let there be an international peace-keeping force," Larrea said.

He reiterated Ecuador's condemnation of a military incursion by Colombia into its territory Saturday that killed 21 FARC members, including their second-in-command, Raul Reyes.

6. You mean like the one on the Israeli-Lebanese border
or some of those in Africa???

Hell, my daughter with a dart gun could do a better job of policing those areas than the UN does.

8. Bad move.
He should instead propose a regional conference outside the parameters of the UN or OAS. The US should have no role in this, only the regional parties.

Ecuador Seeks To Censure Colombia At Emergency OAS Session

(RTTNews) - The Organization of American States-OAS held an emergency meeting Tuesday after Ecuador urged the group to condemn Colombia for violating its territory during a cross-border raid on Saturday.

The emergency meeting aims to peacefully resolve a dispute involving Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, who have sent troops to their borders.

At the emergency session, Ecuador's Foreign Minister Maria Isabel Salvador said an apology would not suffice and demanded a full investigation.

Meanwhile, Colombia's ambassador to the OAS, Camilo Ospina, denied there had been an violation of Quito's territory and said that the Colombian army had fired at the Farc camp from helicopters in Colombian airspace.

Ecuador ready for 'ultimate consequences' in regional crisisPeter Walker and agencies guardian.co.uk, Wednesday March 5 2008

Venezuela was today completing a big military buildup on its border with Colombia as the president of Ecuador, the other player in the region's most perilous crisis for years, said his country would risk the "ultimate consequences" to defend itself.

While analysts still believe warfare between Colombia and its neighbours to the north and south is unlikely, with thousands of heavily armed troops arriving in border regions the situation remains volatile and unpredictable.

A separate, diplomatic front has turned into a test of strength between the leftwing presidents of Ecuador and Venezuela and the US-backed administration in Bogotá.

Enraged by a Colombian bombing raid on Saturday on a rebel camp one mile inside Ecuadorean territory, Ecuador has already sent 3,200 troops to its northern border with Colombia.
