NEW DELHI: The United States on Wednesday urged India to quickly complete all steps required to conclude a civilian nuclear technology deal with Washington before the US presidential polls in November.

"Time is very tight" to get the deal through the US Congress before the United States goes into election mode, US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, Richard Boucher, told reporters in New Delhi.

"I am certainly aware that things fall apart ... but on the other hand, my job is to make things work. What I am focused on right now is how to make things succeed. We both want this to happen," said Boucher, who is on a two day visit here.

"We are kind of playing in overtime right now," added the diplomat, the latest in a line of US officials who have recently told India to move ahead with the deal.

1. Indian-made drugs, forced medical outsourcing of medicare patients to India, and Mangoes!
And all they want is for us to violate the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

What a deal!

2. Let's stop calling it "Medical Outsourcing" and "Medical Tourism."
When the government and insurance companies FORCE poor people to go to India for medical treatment, let's call it "Medical Renditioning."

NEW DELH: Healthcare in India still lags behind countries like Sri Lanka, China and even Bangladesh on several key parameters despite some improvement in the sector, the Economic Survey for 2007-08 said on Thursday.

"India's position on health parameters compared to even some of its neighbours continues to be unsatisfactory. While India has improved with respect to some important health indicators over the years, it compares poorly with countries like China and Sri Lanka," the survey said.

While India's maternal mortality rate per 100,000 live births remains a high 450, it is 45 in China, 58 in Sri Lanka and 320 in Pakistan.

Similarly, infant mortality rate (IMR) in India is 56 per 1,000 live births against 12 in Sri Lanka and 23 in China.
