US Deaths in Afghanistan, Region

As of Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at least 415 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures March 1 at 10 a.m. EST.
Of those, the military reports 283 were killed by hostile action.

Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 63 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, two were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

There were also four CIA officer deaths and one military civilian death.

The latest identifications reported by the military:
_ Two soldiers died Monday during combat in the Sabari District. Killed were Army Spc. Steven R. Koch, 23, Milltown, N.J., and Army Sgt. Robert T. Rapp, 22, Sonora, Calif.
Both were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

DoD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Mar. 3 in the Sabari District of Afghanistan, of wounds suffered during combat operations. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N. C.

Killed were:

Spc. Steven R. Koch, 23, of Milltown, N. J.

Sgt. Robert T. Rapp, 22, of Sonora, Calif.

1. they don't release names until family has been notified
sometimes when there are more than one they seem to wait to release all at once. I expect they are concerned that releasing one name might clue in family of others if they know who is in their guy's unit. There is often a day or so delay, sometimes more.
