U.S. payrolls fall by 63,000 in February (worst in 5 years)

In the clearest suggestion yet of a recession, U.S. nonfarm payrolls fell by 63,000 in February, the second straight decline, the Labor Department reported Friday.

It was the largest drop in payrolls since March 2003, when the economy was struggling through a jobless recovery.

Payrolls for December and January were revised down by 46,000. The job loss in January was revised to 22,000 from 17,000. In December, 41,000 net jobs were created, half the number estimated a month ago. Payrolls have declined by an average of 28,000 over the past three months, down from a gain of 80,000 or so a year ago. Read the full report.

The unemployment rate fell unexpectedly to 4.8% in February from 4.9%, due to a 450,000 decline in the labor force, the largest drop in nearly five years. Economists were expecting the jobless rate to climb to 5%.

4. Lets talk those tax cuts

The tax cuts are a band aid with the price of gas and food 1200 bucks for my husband and I will be food and gas for a month. Thats if food and gas don't climb any higher. The unemployment rate is another story all together. Does the unemployment rate count the workers that are no longer looking for work and that have dropped of unemployment? Really how high is unemployment? I know in Ohio and Michigan we have been in a recession thats not even a question anymore.

How can this number be so far off?

And then there is the "drop in the labor force". I guess that means the number of people falling off unemployment? I soke to a woman the other day who said her mother had filed last year, and it took so much out of her to keep her status up, that she said it almost wasn't worth it. She said she had run out of jobs to apply for locally and was having to drive to other towns to apply for work to keep her benefits up. But she wouldn't be able to afford working at any of those jobs because she can't sell her home and the price of gas is too high for her to make those daily drives. I guess that's the plan.
