Obama Adviser Resigns After Comment
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Barack Obama adviser has resigned after calling rival Hillary Rodham Clinton "a monster."

A campaign official told The Associated Press Friday that Samantha Power's resignation is effective immediately.

Power told The Scotsman that Clinton is a "monster" who will stoop to anything to win. She tried to make the remark off the record, but the Scottish newspaper printed it anyway. She apologized in a statement and the campaign decried the remark.

obama just needs to get his people steeled to the onslaught, and have them realize that there are no 'small things' in this contest...

At this point I just want the better, smarter, winning candidate to keep on winning and get the nomination all summed up. At this point I don't care how they go about it.

63. Are you sure you want to call the strongest advocate
for action in Darfur... a "turd." You may not know a lot about Samantha Power but she is not quite a bad person. Perhaps her only fault is that she's not a politician. She's an academic, who happens to have a lot of very interesting things to say about what's wrong with this world.

She got herself tangled up in quite a few misstatements this time, but here she was stepped down because she called Hillary a "Monster" That seems much more civilized than what you have to say about her.

Its funny to see Hillary supporters complain about how the Obama supporters are so nasty on the boards when they just come back and get nastier.

It is really beneath the candidate who talks about the "new kind of politics" for his campaign to issue crap like Powers' "monster" comment.

By the way, she said something about "just look at her " ... well, I have news for Samantha: you're not much to look at either.

When an Obama supporter/staffer says something negative, it's "Oh, it's NOTHING." or "So what? It's the TRUTH!"

Keep it up. You guys might have to win this one on your own yet.

If the worst thing that any staffer on any campaign ever says is that the opposition is a monster that campaign is doing pretty well.

Calling the opponent a monster BFD.

36. Tyler, with all due repsect
You need to get out more:

http://edition.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/07/mon.hot/index.html

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry lauded Ronald Reagan's legacy of bipartisanship yesterday and canceled five days of campaign events in honor of the former president's death. "Yesterday, we lost one of our great optimists," Mr. Kerry told graduating seniors from Bedford High School. "President Reagan's belief in America was infectious. And because of the way he led, he taught us that there was a difference between strong beliefs and bitter partisanship."

That was just the first one I found with google. You decry the lack of substance in the debate, then make spurious claims yourself that a little *basic* research could prevented.

Obama has already been cleared of this from the Canadian Gov. Nice try... Truth is, Hillary is not who she really is... A Monster...

Betrayal is the hardest to forgive, even more so when there is no acknoledgement of the wrong done.
Sadly to say, that while Hillary has tried to win, she really has lost in many ways....

Hillary did show her disgusting hypocritical characteristics indistinguishable from the worst of the Republican smear machine. And siding with John Mccain over Barack Obama, We've seen this type of "I wanna challenge you to a duel" line that was snapped at Chris Matthews by a "Democrat".... Now that Hillary has been embraced by the far right, how can we expect her to fight for democrats when she is fighting against democrats along side the republicans.

All Hillary supporters, I appreciate your attention to this matter... I ask you to join the Obama team to help take our country in an new direction, one of openness, honesty, integrity, hope, respect, wise judgment and prosperity... Together we can make the difference. We all have worked hard to get power back to the people. With Barack Obama, we have that opportunity...

Thanks All,

How many times do you have to litter the same thread with your vile attitude.

This is how I see it...

Hillary and her campaign have done MUCH WORSE than call Obama a "monster" and if you haven't seen it you haven't been watching. She sure as hell hasn't called any of her staff on it and fired them for their BS. That shows some bad character traits.

Barack fired this lady after speaking her opinion. She wasn't spreading lies like the Clinton camp, just stating her opinion. Because she went negative - Barack fired her ass. That shows some good character traits.

Hillary = dirtiest Rove worshiping campaign ever

Barack = most respectful, fact based, inspiring campaign ever. A campaign that has made people believe that politics as usual doesn't have to be politics as usual.

Get a clue and make your point in less than 5 posts. Beating drus on your baseless point is not going to work, and your not changing anyone's mind.

In which case Obama, through his lackey Dean, is suppressing the opinion of 5,0000,000 people and that counts for something in my book. The thing that I have never gotten over (actually, there's lots of them, but this was the first) is Bush getting away with hijacking the votes of the people of FL through the mob in Miami. It was just so plain unconstitutional. Now all the Obamites are doing this again, only this time the board is behind them. Don't you all care a thing about your principals, or is winning the only thing that matters? This isn't from a person who's always been for Hillary. I voted for Edwards, but Obama's hypocricy, sexism, and anti-democratic stance have just turned me off so much that I now support Clinton.

I'm a Hillary supporter that will gladly vote for Obama if he gets the nomination. Too bad there are so many people willing to throw the election to McCain if Hillary somehow wins this thing. Why would anyone who has worked a good portion of her life to get to this position, drop out when she is only a few delegates behind. Not everyone looks at Obama and sees what deeply committed Obama supporters see. I think he's fine. Green, but could surround himself with good people ( Oh Samantha!!!)and we could hope for the best just like we do with every new President.

Hillary could drop out now, Obama could lose to McCain, and she would still be blamed. Hillary is really in a lose-lose-lose situation.

Obama adviser resigns By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A Barack Obama adviser resigned Friday after calling rival Hillary Rodham Clinton "a monster."

Samantha Power, an unpaid foreign policy adviser and Harvard professor, announced her resignation in a statement provided by the Obama campaign in which she expressed "deep regret."

"Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor and purpose of the Obama campaign," she said. "And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months."

Power's interview Monday was published Friday in a Scottish newspaper, even though she tried to keep it from appearing in print.

While it was a bad thing to say, the statement was suppose to be off the record. It should not have appeared in print to begin with. I doubt anyone will have anything to do with this reporter, let alone the paper she works for.

policy advisor was one of the main reasons I was behind his candidacy. I don't think he should accept her resignation. Hillary seems to have a double standard going here, Obama's not tough enough supposedly to stand up to her smears and lies (lie about Nafta, likening him to Ken Starr) but Hilary is so fragile she can't be called a monster. Samantha is a class act, even though her comments weren't meant to be on the record she still stepped down when they were made public. Hillary WILL stop at nothing. I've never had such a whiplash, to think that February 5th I actually was torn between voting for Hilary or Obama. Hilary's managed to make me detest her in the last two weeks. Causing Samantha Power, a formidably intelligent and compassionate woman to step down, is revolting. I never, ever thought that I would even entertain this idea, but if she manages to manipulate things to actually get this nomination I'm considering staying home. Heck of a job Hillary.

40. Power told The Scotsman
is this like Bush drinking in Germany?

Obama is her Mentor. She has been doing Foreign Advisory work for him for some time now.

44. "Off the record"
She clearly stated her comment was off the record. How many journalists are on DU? Do you believe it was proper to print the comment anyway?

Hillary Clinton has done what the Bushes have wanted to do. Put a huge muzzle on the media. Does the media think their "off the record" sources will trust them now? The media in this country should have seen those three words and refused to print her comments.

Her spokesperson says Hillary has fired campaign workers involved in similar situations and in particular the recent internet innuendo intimating that Barack Obama is a Muslim. Names, please. We do not take her at her word. Or you. Her spokesperson. You should have had the common sense to condemn the publication of comments made off the record before applauding someon being fired for commments made off the record although of course at that point you really couldn't have applauded it, could you?

If people who openly support Hillary Clinton wonder why people give them dirty looks, this is yet another reason why. Hillary Clinton disgusts most people at this point. As do her supporters.

For every lie they tell about Barack Obama, there is a truth about Hillary Clinton. And the American people know the truth. That is why Barack Obama has been ahead of Hillary Clinton since Super Tuesday. That he is ahead of her at all really says all that needs to be said about her or her campaign or her supporters.

51. You can't say it's off the record after the fact..
Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, you can't deny it and pretend it's still in there. That's something they teach you pretty early in journalism class. A person wanting to stay off the record must state these intentions before they say something. Also, off the record doesn't mean that the journalist is supposed to forget what you said, just not print it. There are cases where off record can even be disregarded (usually if the reporter's editor demands them to).

53. Very clearly "off the record"
""She is a monster, too – that is off the record – she is stooping to anything," Ms Power said, hastily trying to withdraw her remark.""

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/world/39Hillary-Clinton39s-a-monster39-Obama.3854371.jp

She very clearly stated it was off the record. No legitimate journalist would have printed it. And no legitimate journalist would have reprinted it even if it had already been printed. Adding the "hastily trying to withdraw the remark" does not negate the fact that the comment was clearly off the record.

Kay Graham is turning in her grave.

49. Thatta boy, Barack!!
This is just what I thought the campaign needed to and should do. I'm glad he made it perfectly clear to his campaign staff that this type of shit is not acceptable. Hopefully, this will end the scandal before it begins.

55. Nooooooooo! This is seriously impacting my vote.
I'm sorry, but Samantha Power was one of the few people who actually seemed to understand that there was another way for the U.S. to behave on the international stage besides swaggering and threatening. The fact that Hillary through her surrogates has now forced this woman off the stage infuriates me.

I'm trying so hard to keep an open mind and remain able to vote for Hillary should she win. Every day she makes it harder.
