Senate candidate asks board to indict Bush, CheneyBy Laura Dolce / Seacoast Online
KENNEBUNKPORT, ME — Calling President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney "notorious, alleged war criminals," Independent U.S. Senate candidate Laurie Dobson called upon the Board of Selectmen last week to adopt an indictment ordinance allowing town leaders to arrest war criminals.

Noting that "alleged war criminals occasionally exist in our town," Dobson said she wanted the town to take steps to bring them to justice since federal officials, including members of Congress, have failed to do so thus far. "Fifty-one percent of Americans support impeachment," Dobson said. If impeachment doesn't happen, though, she said arresting Bush and Cheney — after they leave office — would be the "patriotic" thing to do.
Dobson held a press conference on the steps of town hall last Tuesday, calling for the arrest of both Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for "war crimes." At that time, Town Manager Larry Mead said it was his understanding that towns in Maine have no power to indict. Dobson, however, addressed that issue in her speech.
"I can assert after consulting with my legal counsel that I am not asking for anything illegal, improper or impossible," she said. "In fact, this is in keeping with the intention behind the power of citizen legislation, something we empower our citizens to do in Maine, when they want to do something about their government. Whatever we don't like, and think is wrong, we can bring up in town meeting and for referendum on the ballot."
