Police Release Photos of Suspect in UNC Senior's Slaying
Source: WRAL

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Police asked for help identifying a man in surveillance pictures whom they want to question in connection with the killing of Eve Carson, 22, a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lt. Kevin Gunter, a spokesman for the Chapel Hill Police Department, called the man a suspect after the press conference Saturday morning. Police Chief Brian Curran described the photos as “the biggest break” and “strongest lead” in the case yet.

Two photographs show a black man in his late teens or early 20s. He is riding in a sport-utility vehicle with a roof rack that might have been Carson's. Officers emphasized they did not definitively know if the vehicle belonged to Carson.

The suspect was attempting to use her ATM card at a local bank.

The still photograph doesn't always load with the story, but it is currently on the wral.com home page.

1. 400 dollars is all her life was worth?
That's the maximum daily withdrawal at my bank from an ATM. Hell, I didn't even know the woman who was killed but I would have gladly GIVEN that motherfucker the money to spare her life.

I have little tolerance for criminals & in cases like this I fully support the death penalty. Senseless killing should bring on your own death.

4. I would have gladly given all I could to spare her life, but not to him.
I don't know how the anti gun-control people are going to attempt to justify their positions based on this, but they will.

5. I am against gun control as it does not pertain to criminals.
Criminals will not turn in their guns if a law was passed. Thats why they are called criminals. If only law abiding people turn in their guns what good would that do? Would crimes like these cease?

12. Gun control doesn't mean that law abiding people must turn in their guns.
Gun control should make it more difficult for people with criminal histories or for people with substance abuse or mental health problems to get hold of guns.

16. Criminals don't obey any laws
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 11:02 PM by DBoon
That's why they are called criminals.

Are you against all laws then?

There are many unsolved murders - surely the laws against murder are thus ineffective? Or is it only gun control laws that must be 100% effective?

You seem to be arguing that the only law is you, your gun, and your attitude at the moment.

You may wish to check into emigrating to Somalia - there are plenty of guns there. Must mean people are safe there. After all, you don't think laws matter.

22. I thought the objective was to stop criminal misuse of guns?
What gun control law would achieve this objective without restricting the rights of honest citizens? Why do we need NEW gun control laws when we don't enforce the 20,000 laws already on the books?

11. Ah, you thought this shooting was like the UNI or Virginia tech shooting.
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 06:08 PM by Wcross
No, this was a criminal who was in it for economic benefit. It also didn't happen ON CAMPUS. I was also thrown off by your keyboard malfunction (I hope) in the title line.

This has nothing to do with a university other than the fact the crime victim was a student. I also made my comment before you added the sarcasm tag.

13. I would argue that stricter hand gun control is necessary.
And that the easy availability of guns makes this kind of crime more likely.

But I know that there are others who would say that the real solution would be to put guns in the hands of everyone.

14. How about making the punishment harsher for using a gun?
Wouldn't that be a realistic goal that would be much more effective?

18. If you think the killer of this girl would have been influenced by the possibility
of a harsher sentence, then that's a logical thought.

But I think her killing might have been impulsive -- or, if it wasn't, that the killer was young and stupid enough to be confidant he wouldn't be caught. So how would he be stopped by the possibility of a harsher sentence?

Better to keep the guns out of criminals' hands in the first place. And that shouldn't threaten anyone who does not have a criminal record or a history of substance abuse.

19. We could start by making gun possession by prohibited people harsher.
If you are caught with a gun & are a convicted felon you get ten years in the pen. That is a law on the books but it is usually plea bargained down to nothing. "Youths" under 18 with a handgun- ten years confinement. How many people attempt to buy a gun & are denied by the insta-check system? How many are prosecuted for lying on the yellow form- that's a felony. We need to prosecute those people.

Obviously when an individual decides to murder a gun law is the last thing on his mind. They may think twice before carrying a gun if it means ten years in the pen.

in the publics eye. given six to nine years on death row they'll chime in and demand a stay for the sake of humanity and all......;)

26. Okay, I'll say it: The death penalty is wrong. Even in this case.
Even though he's "a playa" and she's a pretty white girl.

If you're going to oppose the death penalty, you need to be consistent.

23. He's wearing a throw-back Houston Astros hat, which is a trademark of the Hoover Crips
gang. Could maybe be a gang-related initiation type crime, or simply just another wannabe gang punk emulating them.
