Britain makes camera that "sees" under clothes
Source: Reuters

A British company has developed a camera that can detect weapons, drugs or explosives hidden under people's clothes from up to 25 meters away in what could be a breakthrough for the security industry.

The T5000 camera, created by a company called ThruVision, uses what it calls "passive imaging technology" to identify objects by the natural electromagnetic rays -- known as Terahertz or T-rays -- that they emit.

The high-powered camera can detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet away and is effective even when people are moving. It does not reveal physical body details and the screening is harmless, the company says.

The technology, which has military and civilian applications and could be used in crowded airports, shopping malls or sporting events, will be unveiled at a scientific development exhibition sponsored by Britain's Home Office on March 12-13.

7. Are you sure?
I'm dubious. How can it reveal the image of a weapon or explosive, but not the body outline?

15. The article quoted in the OP said that, not me.
If you have contrary evidence, post it. If you have questions, ask the fucking writer. And an outline isn't "physical details" anyway.

19. But you responded with it to someone referencing adolescent voyeurism
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 03:26 PM by YankmeCrankme
It seemed you were deriding the poster for his expectation that this would be abused. Of course, I don't expect it to show moles or tattoos, but the viewing of the outline of a womens body can be suggestive and prurient.

You apparently trust the government in not violating people's privacy, I don't.

And no need to get snippy.

edited to add:

See post 17.

23. I wasn't deriding the poster.
I was joining in on the joke. The butt of which was teenaged boys, who will not have access to these devices, no doubt. See, this has nothing to do with trusting the government or not, because -- you know what? Never mind.

I do get snippy when humor-cognition impaired fucks go all joykill on jokes. Have a nice evening, and watch out for the gub'mint.

Why wouldn't you clarify that first...no, you go right to being an ass and using obscene language directed at me. I'd normally apologize about misinterpreting your post, but the lack of character and civility displayed in your subsequent posts makes that unnecessary.

Have a nice life!

20. Ya Know What?
In the part of the country where I live, people are running all over the place with concealed weapons. They casually pull these guns out and slaughter people at random. Every day stories of worthy people murdered by anonymous killers. It never stops, and it's getting worse. On my way home from work, I glance at you as you walk past my car at a stop light; you pull out a gun and blow me away.

Many of these killers, and their victims, are kids who haven't developed the judgement necessary to handle deadly weapons. Or they're offenders who've spent so much time in prison that they bring prison values to the outside. They aren't qualified to own guns. It hurts the families of murder victims; it hurts the kids who do the shooting.

I would usually be against snoop devices like the T5000. But something has to be developed that will get guns away from people who shouldn't have them.

Flame me all you want, but you can't justify the genocidal murder rate that's going on in this country. Yean, I know; it's because of our war policies; our abusive capital system; we've armed the world and the chickens are coming home to roost, etc.

I still can't justify turning our communities into a video game of mayhem and murder.
