China foils attempted terror attack on flight
Source: Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) - China foiled a bid to cause an air disaster on a passenger jet en route to Beijing and the plane made a safe emergency landing, an official said on Sunday, in what state media called an attempted terrorist attack.

The China Southern flight originated in Urumqi, capital of the restive far western Chinese region of Xinjiang, where militant Uighurs have agitated for an independent "East Turkestan".

It landed in the northwestern city of Lanzhou on Friday after the crew discovered and foiled the attempt to "cause an air disaster", Xinjiang Governor Nuer Baikeli told reporters on the sidelines of the annual session of parliament.

"Who the people involved in the incident were, where they were from, what their aim was and what their background was, we are now investigating," he said.

The official Xinhua news agency said authorities had "foiled a planned terrorist attack".

"Fortunately our air crew took resolute measures, discovered and put a stop to this action promptly. All the passengers, crew and the aircraft are safe," the governor said, adding the flight finally arrived in Beijing on Saturday.

A source with knowledge of the incident told Reuters that at least two passengers on flight CZ6901 have been taken into custody for questioning.

6. Yeah, these guys are comparable to Russia's Cechnya (so to speak).
Not good for the innocents, not good at all. China is like Russia. They won't take the time to sort the innocents from the guilty.

Oh hell wait. Neither did we.

5. Muslim Terrorists Plot To Attack Olympics In China ( AP)
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese police killed alleged terrorists plotting to attack the Beijing Olympics, while a flight crew managed to prevent an apparent attempt to crash a Chinese jetliner in a separate case just last week, officials said Sunday.

Wang Lequan, the top Communist Party official in the western region of Xinjiang, said materials seized in a January raid in the regional capital, Urumqi, had described a plot with a purpose "specifically to sabotage the staging of the Beijing Olympics."

"Their goal was very clear," Wang told reporters in Beijing.

"These guys are fantasizing if they think they can disrupt the Olympics," said Wang, known for his hardline stance on crushing dissent. "They don't have the strength."

Few details were available about the alleged attempt to crash the China Southern Airlines flight that left Urumqi at 10:35 a.m. on Friday.

Bekri, the governor of the Xinjiang region, indicated that more than one person was involved, but did not specify who was suspected to be behind the attempt, saying it remains under investigation.

"From what we presently know, this was an attempt to crash the plane," Bekri said.

7. The Chinese government
is exaggerating the religiosity of the Uighurs, largely because it plays better with the US goverment to claim they're cracking down on Muslim extremists than on culturally distinct people who want their own state. The situation in Xinjiang is similar to the situation in Tibet. Uighurs, though Muslim, are traditionally very moderate when it comes to their religion.
