Lieberman could snag cabinet post if McCain elected
Source: The Raw Story

If Sen. John McCain (D-AZ) prevails in his bid to keep the White House in Republican hands for the next four years, one of his most hawkish colleagues could find himself overseeing the Department of Defense, State or Homeland Security within a McCain White House.

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democrats' onetime vice presidential nominee who left the party last year, is seen as a likely McCain pick for a cabinet level appointment, according to Roll Call:

Atop McCain’s short list, according to closely aligned Republican Senators and aides, likely would be two of the Arizonan’s most vocal supporters: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) for attorney general or Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) as secretary of State, Defense or Homeland Security. Graham and Lieberman have been stumping for McCain for months and are considered two of the most loyal and ardent backers of his Iraq War policy.

“Those are two of the most obvious choices from the Senate,” observed one Republican Senate aide.

1. Was there ever any doubt?
I've always assumed that he might get at least a cabinet spot, maybe even the VP slot (appear to be a "uniter" and to thumb his nose at his former GOP rivals...)

2. We are picking up Senate seats this year regardless
No more 51-49 shoestring majority. We'll have Lieberman insurance. Putting him in the Cabinet will get him the hell out of the Senate.

12. CT has a Republican Governor
They will get a Republican. Leiberman is with them on the war and a few other issues - but not on all. He is a Democrat still on somethings.

17. Well, but we've got a GOP governor. So we'll get another
Republican in the senate for a few years.

5. The prospect of shit like this should serve as a wakeup call
to all those saying they won't vote Democratic if their candidate doesn't win the nomination.

10. It should serve as a wake up call to Harry
Once your 51-49 Senate makeup is gone, kick Lieberman to the curb. Pull his chair position out from under him, give it to an actual Democrat. Give it to somebody that did not change parties, give it to somebody that is not campaigning for Republicans, give it to somebody that is not on FOX saying that he is open to caucusing in the Senate with the Republicans. Joe is on his last 4 years in the Senate so he is going out with a bang. I hope they find a strong candidate to run against him just to guarantee his departure. Senate Majority leader, wake up! You are being blackmailed and I would hope that one Wednesday Nov. 5 2008 you make some committee assignment changes, or step down from your post.

9. LIEberman's betrayal was certainly paid for with promises of a high cabinet post: probably State
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 11:15 AM by ReformedChris
With the kind of support that Lieberman has thrown at McCain, there is only one way to "repay" that kind of loyalty. I can see Lieberman parlaying this into some power post he has dreamed about since being on the ticket with Al in 2000.

14. I frankly doubt Lieberman would want that,
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 12:34 PM by Gman
his ego being what it is. There's more power in being a US Senator. A US Senator really doesn't work for anyone except (in theory, at least) the people of their state. A cabinet member is essentially a high ranking manager in the huge bureaucracy known as the executive branch.

18. He knows this is his last term in the senate.
His staff knows that, too.

That's part of why he's behaving as outrageously as he is. He doesn't care.

22. Then, the thing is that
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 03:23 PM by Gman
Lieberman wouldn't even be up for reelection until a "president" McCain stands for reelection in 2012. At that point is when it would be logical for Lieberman to not run for reelection and support McCain.

I dunno... but I can't see him giving up a US Senate position for essentially a high ranking "staff" job.

23. Honestly? I don't know what the heck he'd do. I really think he's
gone right off his rocker.

Not that I ever liked him. But he's just been particularly unhinged since the Democrats of CT had the sheer effrontery not to vote for him in the primary last time.

24. I don't know that he's "gone off his rocker"
He has said he feels freer to do and talk about things he couldn't do and talk about before. But Lieberman has always been a social liberal and is great on those issues.

I just think there's a lot more power in being a US Senator and chair of Homeland Security than there is in being a high ranking bureaucrat. Lieberman still has an ego bigger'n Dallas (which is bigger than CT).

this is the guy who was siding with the state's Catholic hospitals when they wanted to deny emergency contraception to rape victims...

Since when did McCain become a Democrat?

And we all know that if McCain wins, Lieberman is going to get something out of it. But I hate it that they still call that traitor to the party a Dem.
