US drops China from list of top human rights abusers

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US dropped China from its list of the world's worst human rights violaters, but added Syria, Uzbekistan and Sudan to the alleged offenders in an annual report released Tuesday.

The State Department's 2007 Human Rights Report showed China, which has raised hopes it will improve human rights by hosting the 2008 Olympics, had parted company with countries like North Korea, Myanmar and Iran.

No reason was given for removing China -- which has been a key partner in talks with Washington to denuclearize North Korea -- from the list but the new report said China's "overall human rights record remained poor" in 2007

Former U.S. president Bush visits China

Published: March 8, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Print story Email to a friend Font size:BEIJING, March 8 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush acknowledged the progress of U.S.-China relations when he met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing this week.

During the Friday meeting, Hu said the two countries want to create strong bilateral ties, Xinhua reported. He placed importance on the peaceful growth of the Asian-Pacific area, the state-run news agency reported.

China has been willing to deal with major issues through peaceful talks while beefing up bilateral exchanges based in mutual equality, respect and benefit, Hu said.

Hu also told Bush he was thankful for Bush's efforts to support friendship between their two countries, and briefed him about China's arrangements for the Olympic Games this year, the report said.

9. United States leading the world in incarcerations:

News item:

"Criminal justice experts from the U.S. Justice Department report that the United States has the largest prison population and highest incarceration rate in the world . . . report released by the justice department on Nov. 30 reported 1 in every 32 American adults -- or a record 7 million people -- were incarcerated, on probation or on parole at the end of 2005, with 2.2 million of them in prison or jail. The International Center for Prison Studies at King's College, London reported that this number was the highest of any country, with China ranking second with 1.5 million prisoners, and Russia sitting in third with 870,000."

On the other hand:

China is killing fewer people:

"Only 'extremely vile criminals' were executed in China last year, the
country's most senior judge declared today, lauding the success
of efforts to curb the death penalty. The decline
estimated by independent analysts to be as great as 30% year-
on-year, is thought to be the result of "kill fewer, kill carefully" reforms
introduced in early 2006 which gave the supreme court the right to overturn
capital sentences handed down by lower courts. . .Amnesty International recorded 1,010 executions in China in 2006 on the
basis of published reports alone — 40% lower than the previous year, but
still two-thirds of the global total. It believes the real number may have
been closer to 8,000."

11. Hey, it stands to reason:
after all, why keep a country on the list when you can no longer distinguish your own country from it?

12. I bet Dubya was extorted to some extent.
China has unusual pull on the US beaucracy, mainly because they billions billions of debt from us. I bet China either offered a bribe to Dubya or threatened him to do their bidding. Either way, this whole thing seems a bit inside baseball to me.
