Toyota union vote cancelled, for now
Source: Financial Post

TORONTO -- Ever since they built Canada's first Corolla car nearly 20 years ago, workers at Toyota Motor Corp.'s hulking assembly plant in Cambridge, Ont. have resisted unionizing, putting their full trust instead in a company that was growing fast and making quality cars consumers were eager to buy.

Time after time, they have pushed the Canadian Auto Workers away. Time after time, Toyota has convinced them there's nothing to be gained in exchange for paying hundreds of dollars in union dues a year.

Now, courted heavily by the International Association of Machinists, a different union that is touting a "soft sell" approach, a majority of them appears to have rejected organized labour's advances yet again.

Just hours before a vote on unionization was to be held Thursday at the Cambridge facility, Toyota said it received notification from the Ontario Labour Relations Board that the machinists union withdrew its certification application. The vote was cancelled.

3. Are they?
Corporations have a history of not acting in the best interest of the employee.

7. Well enough, it seems...
...that the workers resisted unionizing.

People also have a history of not fixing what appears not to be broken. Did Toyota strong-arm the workers in this case, or are the workers more or less satisfied? Or both?

10. I used to be in the IAM and knew people who worked for
Toyota without a contract. They were very happy.

14. Sorry but I've owned them for 20 years. America doesn't
know how to make a four cylinder car. They are fabulous cars, take abuse and keep on ticking. I now drive a Vibe and it is just a toyota matrix - love it! I also get 35 almost on gas and it carries my handicap scooter and the cargo space is unreal.

Seventy thousand miles and not one problem. And it will go and go and go........................

Great cars for kids. Bought one for son in 96 and it had 115 thou on it, we finally retired it at over 300 and it never failed to crank. Sorry but they are FAR from a pos.

9. Toyota is a Japanese Manufacturer...
The philosophy at Toyota is much different from their American competitors and I know my wife is extremely happy working for Toyota, has no gripes at all, and my wife and I both feel that a Toyota would outlast an American car anyday, so why would you think Toyota makes POS cars??? I've had my 2000 Tacoma since July '99; put 111,000 miles on it so far and have had no problems and expect it to run until at least 2-300,000 miles.
