Democrat Wants Answers on Obama Passport Breach (Waxman wants answers)
Source: ABC News

Senior House Dem Gives Monday Deadline to Know Identity of Firm Involved in Peeking at Obama's Passport Records

A senior House Democrat wants to know the name of the as-yet-unnamed State Department contracting firm involved in illicitly peeking at Barack Obama's passport records.

"I...believe this information should be made publicly available," wrote House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., in a letter today to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Waxman also asked Rice to identify the workers involved in the snooping.

Three State contract employees improperly accessed the passport records of presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., earlier this year, the State Department revealed yesterday following a reporter's query.

...

On Friday, Rice personally apologized to Obama for the incidents.

Waxman gave Rice a Monday deadline to respond to his request. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

2. I'll give you 3 days, do you hear me??? 3 DAYS
and if you don't have them on my desk in 3 DAYS sharp then i'll extend it for 5 more days to allow you to prepare a thorough answer. Further extensions are absolutely out of the question unless the first extension expires, in which case we reserve the right to further extend our demands.

5. What could possibly be in them?
What could be in them that could be used against him? This could actually be some nosey employees that just got caught. Or they could have been looking to score a big payday with the repugs on the off chance their was something that could be teisted to use against him. I just don't see anything damning in them.

7. The issue is privacy.
Have you ever filled out an application for a passport? If so, you are already aware of what information is contained in your file at the State Department.

9. Hello, then from a Navy brat!
Passport apps require social security number, parents' info, mother's maiden name, place of birth, original birth cert, etc.

12. I never said that there is anything to be 'used against him' -
it is an issue of privacy. The 'snoopers' - whether their actions were politically nefarious or not remains to be seen - violated the Privacy Act.

13. Mother's maiden name and social
can be used to get into his personal finances, I would imagine.,.. Hey, my big question here is why do "contract employees" get that kind of access? What kind of "contract employees" are working for the US state department? And the headline in LBN states that they were "Officials" Why the F are contract employees considered officials. This administration has totally sold us out to the highest (or sometimes lowest) bidder.

15. I agree.
I would like to know the names of the contracted companies and their ties/history to this administration. Is rather ironic to hear a State Dept. spokesperson saying that they value our privacy and that what happened is unacceptable all the while illegally wiretapping us.

Nuggets
A few more details about the Obama passport breach.
According to a new piece out in the Post from Glenn Kessler,

the breaches occurred
Jan. 9th,
Feb. 21st and
March 14th.

That would be
the day after the New Hampshire primary,
the day of the Democratic debate in Texas and
the day the Wright story really hit.

10. All 3 Candidates' Passport Files Breached
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 01:15 PM by BlueJessamine
(AP) -- The passport files of the three presidential candidates - Sens. Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain - have been breached, the State Department said Friday.

It is unacceptable that it happened a first time to any candidate. For there to be three seperate breaches is outrageous.

The State department is investigating it themselves, while Bush's Justice Department monitors.

Hopefully Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will show support to Rep. Henry Waxman's investigation.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 01:43 PM by rocknation
The passport file of McCain was breached, too, and Hillary's was breached LAST YEAR! That's PROOF that there's no partisan conspiracy going on--shame on you for "politicizing" an already bad situation by thinking otherwise!

17. Hilary's was "breached" during a training session unlike Gramps and Obama's
SO nothing happened to Hillary's information, it was during training, not
unfettered unaccounted for "breaching".

20. So it WAS the same contractor!!!
Shouldn't they have been investigated (if not FIRED) after the second breach (Obama's first, if it's true that Hillary was breached in 2007)? They were allowed to continue to stay in business after sending at least FOUR people who effectively PILFERED from them? The owner is probably a big-bucks contributor to the Bush monarchy--that would explain the lack of interest in replacing them.

for political purposes and is using the Patriot Act as a way to do so as well.

It's time to impeach him.
