Sen. Clinton Linked To Embargo Scandal
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 02:14 PM by lligrd

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., March 24 (UPI) -- Public documents suggest Sen. Hillary Clinton had a close relationship with an Indonesian businessman charged with 86 counts of campaign finance violations.

The 11,046 pages of Clinton's activities while serving as first lady suggest she discussed the removal of a 30-year-old U.S. trade embargo against Vietnam with Indonesian businessman Mochtar Riady at a 1993 party honoring her as an "Arkansan of the Year," The Washington Times reported Monday.

Riady, a substantial donor to former President Bill Clinton's bid for the White House in 1992, reportedly sat at the head table with Hillary Clinton and was designated on the guest list as "giving large donation."

Riady discussed the embargo with Bill Clinton almost a week after the gala, and by that time had pledged a $3 million loan to the Clinton campaign in 1992.

15. I think it's in here...

Riady discussed the embargo with Bill Clinton almost a week after the gala, and by that time had pledged a $3 million loan to the Clinton campaign in 1992.

Riady's banking firm, Lippo Group, opened offices in Vietnam six months after the party and Bill Clinton lifted the embargo in February 1994.

LippoBank California, a subsidiary of Lippo Group, pleaded guilty in 2001 to 86 charges its associates made illegal campaign contributions to Democrats from 1988 through 1994, the Times said.

James Riady, Mochtar's son, forked over more than $8 million in fines in 2001 for a charge of defrauding the U.S. government by violating election laws.

Hillary Clinton's campaign issued a response to the Times piece saying Mochtar Riady made a large donation in 1993 to the March of Dimes at the gala and the Democratic National Committee returned $1.6 million of his $3 million in contributions.

10. Funny how Ken Starr could find this, with a money trail, and everything.
Guess he wasn't looking for legitimate abuses of power, just media smut.
