Americans seek employment in India
Source: NDTV.COM

...Durbin, requesting his identity not be disclosed till he joins the job in Bangalore next month, said he was nervous as he did not know if he will get the work visa or not. ''I hope, I will,'' he said, as he went inside to submit his applications. It will take another couple of days before he knows if his application has been approved...

...Though, India might still not be a hot destination for foreigners like the US is for Indians for jobs, Kumar said applications for work visa has been gradually increasing. From what used to be a rare category of visas a couple of years ago, hardly a day passes when the Consulate in New York does not receive at least one such application in this regard.

In the past two years, the New York Consulate has issued work visa to more than 900 people. In 2006 the New York Consulate issued 335 employment visas while in 2007, more than 430 employment visas were issued. If the trend of the first three months is of any indication, 2008 could well break all previous records. It is a couple of applications every day, Kumar said.
...

...Figures made available indicated the Indian Embassy in Washington issued about 300 work visas in past two years, while Houston Consulate down South issued nearly 100; indicating India is gradually emerging as employment destination for the Americans as job opportunities in the US has increasingly been shrinking in past two years...

3. What About US Students Wanting Visas for Studies in India? Any Change There?
Less number of US students coming to India for studies

Chalsa (WB), Dec 18: Less number of American students were coming to India for studies because of the "inordinate delay" in getting Indian visas, US embassy public affairs minister counsellor Larry Schwartz claimed here today.

"For some reason or the other, may be bureaucratic process, American students are not getting Indian visas while Indian students are getting US visas and all help to study in America," Schwartz said, addressing a three-day conference for Fulbright scholars in South Asia. "This year 30 American students could not avail Indian visas as they were issued very late," he said.

Another reason for less students coming here was the "interference" by Indian authorities in the choice of subjects of US students, Schwartz said.

He said delays in issuing Indian visas was "unfortunate", especially when indo-us ties were getting stronger. The Fulbright, would shortly open a centre at R.E.C at Silchar in Assam soon to cover more areas in the north-eastern region to help more students get opportunities to study in America, he added.

4. I would imagine most if not all of them are airline pilots
Airlines in India are recruiting American airline pilots aggressively due to a lack of Indian pilots and the military obligations of many Indian pilots that is a major nuisance to their airlines.

I know a pilot who was offered direct entry as a captain at an Indian airline.

7. Coolness

I know some Americans who are working in India and love it. You can get much more for your money there although the currency exchange would not make it worthwhile to bring any money back to the US. A typical middle class person could get a maid, cook, and driver.

There is a DUer whose daughter is studying in India right now. I hear good things about that experience.

I wish more Americans would go to India for whatever reason and see what it's like. They would be pleasantly surprised and it would help improve relations between the people of both countries. Plenty of Europeans and East Asians do but not many Americans or Canadians, probably because of the distance.
