Father Released From Prison To Visit Dying Daughter
Source: KETV Omaha News

OMAHA, Neb. -- An imprisoned father went to his dying daughter's bedside Wednesday, a visit federal authorities allowed only after being deluged with letters and phone calls from across the nation.

Jayci Yaeger, 10, has terminal brain cancer. Her family has been pleading with federal prison officials in Yankton, S.D., to allow her father, Jason Yaeger, to see his daughter before she dies.

On Wednesday afternoon, prison guards drove Jason Yaeger to a Lincoln hospice, where he spent several hours at her bedside. No one else was allowed in the room except Jason Yaeger, Jayci and the escorts.

Sources said Yaeger did leave the girl's side to consult with hospice counselors and get some direction on how to speak with the girl about what she was going through.
Prior to Wednesday, the prison warden had allowed Jason Yaeger three visits to his daughter, but had denied requests for a longer furlough or an early transfer to a halfway house in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The warden told Yaeger it was not viewed as an extraordinary circumstance.

I read of this just a few days ago or so here on DU. Thought you might want to know that the warden was moved to allow this because of public outcry.

14. It's cool to think that maybe my call and my email helped.
:kick: I called and emailed the South Dakota Democratic Senator Tim Johnson, and sent the story and asked for his help. I would like to think that my 2cents made a little difference.Bless that poor child and her family.

5. Good for the Warden. I wish it hadn't taken public outcry,
but I give him credit for his willingness to change his mind and risk being called a flip-flopper.

:applause:

23. You don't get a lot of human decency out of the Bureau of Prisons.

6. I'm so glad. I saw this story on TV the other day, and I felt so bad
for that little girl. He mother said she believed the little girl was just holding on to life to be able to see her father again.

10. This has always been untruthful. He was released I think three
previous times to see her. I'm glad they are doing is but tell the truth, he had seen her on previous occasions.

11. There's always one naysayer

The girl is dying, how many times would you have allowed someone to visit their dying child.

24. I understand what you are saying but the original article painted
a much different picture - mean prison authorities won't let man see dying child when that was untrue. Just tell the truth.

12. Didn't you bother to read the story? It clearly indicates he had been to see her 3 times earlier.
"Prior to Wednesday, the prison warden had allowed Jason Yaeger three visits to his daughter, but had denied requests for a longer furlough or an early transfer to a halfway house in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The warden told Yaeger it was not viewed as an extraordinary circumstance."
We have also read that fact in other stories concerning this sad, sad situation.

15. So happy to hear this!
I'm sure most of the letters and phone calls I've made on various issues have fallen on deaf ears. I'm happy to say that on something as relevant as this, it would seem my efforts, along with those of many others, have finally gotten through.

17. "not viewed as an extraordinary circumstance"
If this means what it seems to mean, then the US prison system has gone sharply downhill since the '30s.

Saul Alinsky, before he became Mr Community Organizer, worked as a prison sociologist at Joliet. He noted that, on any day someone was to be electrocuted, most of the prison staff from the warden down spent the day getting plastered. Even though the victim usually was a hardened murderer, during his time in prison he'd become a real person to the staff, not a mere number or case report, and the idea of killing him in cold blood was just too much for the prison staff to handle without the numbness alcohol brought. In order to throw the switch or even watch, as they were required to do, they had to be almost falling-down drunk.

It sounds like this warden would have been an exception.

19. If we expect humanity from those we imprison when they get out...
Shouldn't we expect humanity from the guards/administrators while they're there?

20. If this shows us anything, it is that a little humanity goes a long way
but beyond that, what power there is in writing letters to the power structure in such numbers as to force sanity to prevail.

A 10-year-old girl has died, just a day after her wish to see her father was granted.

Jayci Yaeger's imprisoned father, Jason, went to her bedside Wednesday -- a visit federal authorities allowed only after being deluged with letters and phone calls from across the nation.
