Treasury Warns Of Deception By Iran

Treasury Warns Banks That Iran Is Engaging In Deceptive Practices To Skirt Sanctions

(AP) The Bush administration issued a fresh warning Thursday to U.S. banks that Iran is using "an array of deceptive practices" to hide its alleged involvement in nuclear proliferation and terrorist activities.

The Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network alleged that Iran is resorting to such alleged practices to evade detection and skirt financial sanctions.

"The government of Iran disguises its involvement in proliferation and terrorism activities through an array of deceptive practices specifically designed to evade detection," FinCen said in its warning to banks.

For instance, the agency said that the Iran's central bank, also known as Bank Markazi, and Iranian commercial banks have requested that their names be removed from global financial transactions to make it difficult to "determine the true parties in the transaction."

It marked the government's latest effort to ramp up pressure on Iran, which the United States accuses of bankrolling terrorism and seeking a nuclear bomb.

1. Good grief. They are pulling out all the stops before attacking.
Now the Treasury is involved. I sure wish we had an aggressive media in this country; there must be memos or e-mails ordering government agencies to beat the drum for war. We need to see them.

9. That was my thought, as well.
Now the Treasury is rattling the sabers? That's pretty outrageous.

Well, oh just a moment.
Let's see the Treasury is having some dire problems of its own. Some bailouts...let's see....Bear Stearns. Next: Lehman Brothers about to topple. After them, JP Morgan. After them, Citibank.

Yup, looks like projection to me.:smoke:

7. After reading the headline, I thought Bush was blaming the
housing/mortgage/credit swap/deriviative/CDO/FED bailout crises on Iran. I'm sure if that were to happen, the MSM would just report, and never call him on it. They'd have a bunch of 'experts' on, and ask them what they thought of Iran's blame in Wall Street greed.

23. Well, it is newsworthy
I don't see where reporting this makes CBS "complicit" in administration policies. (BTW, that does not necessarily mean I "endorse" the administration's claims.)

Wouldn't you rather know about this report, than have it completely ignored by the media? I know I would.

25. Hmmm....
Iraq begins selling it's oil for Euros instead of dollars in 2000.

A little over two years later the U.S. invades Iraq.

Iran begins selling it's oil for Euros instead of dollars in 2008.

Now we're being told that Iran is building nukes and must be stopped.

Coincidence?

21. A declaration of war against Iran
Day of Infamy: The March 20, 2008 US Declaration of War on Iran

March 20, 2008, destined to be another day of infamy. On this date the US officially declared war on Iran. But it's not going to be the kind of war many have been expecting.

No, there was no dramatic televised announcement by President George W. Bush from the White House oval office. In fact on this day, reports the Washington Post, Bush spent some time communicating directly with Iranians, telling them via Radio Farda (the US-financed broadcaster that transmits to Iran in Farsi, Iran's native language) that their government has "declared they want to have a nuclear weapon to destroy people." But not to worry, he told his listeners in Farsi-translated Bushspeak: Tehran would not get the bomb because the US would be "firm."

But make no mistake. As of Thursday, March 20 the US is at war with Iran.

So who made it official?

A unit within the US Treasury Department, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which issued a March 20 advisory to the world's financial institutions under the title: "Guidance to Financial Institutions on the Continuing Money Laundering Threat Involving Illicit Iranian Activity."

FinCEN, though part of the chain of command, is better known to bankers and lawyers than to students of US foreign policy. Nevertheless, when the history of this newly declared war is someday written (assuming the war is allowed to proceed) FinCEN's role will be as important as that played by US Central Command (Centcom) in directing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As of March 20, however, the US, speaking through FinCEN, is now telling all banks around the world "to take into account the risk arising from the deficiencies in Iran's AML/CFT regime, as well as all applicable U.S. and international sanctions programs, with regard to any possible transactions" with – and this is important – not just the above three banks but every remaining state-owned, private and special government bank in Iran. In other words, FinCEN charges, all of Iran's banks – including the central bank (also on FinCEN's list) – represent a risk to the international financial system, no exceptions. Confirmation is possible by comparing FinCEN's list of risky Iranian banks with the listing of Iranian banks provided by Iran's central bank.

Much, much more at the link. I do believe the USA is now at war with Iran.

If so, what consequence could OUR sharp talk be to the Iranians. Do they have any reason to care what we say?
