School Districts That Got Recalled Beef Are Listed
Source: New York Times

The Department of Agriculture on Thursday released a list of all school districts nationwide that received beef included in last month’s recall of 143 million pounds of meat from a California slaughterhouse.

The 226-page document, which the agency released under pressure from lawmakers, includes a list of so-called “school food authorities” — the rough equivalent of school districts — that received the recalled beef.

The Department of Agriculture issued the largest beef recall in United States history last month after the Humane Society of the United States released undercover video showing workers at Hallmark/Westland Meat Company in Chino, Calif., forcing sick cows onto a slaughterhouse kill floor by using forklifts, electric prods and high-pressure water hoses.

There have been no reported illnesses from the meat, and agriculture officials emphasized that the chances of someone becoming sick was slim. The meat was recalled because cows that cannot stand on their own — called “downer cows” — are typically banned from the human food supply because they are more susceptible to certain illnesses, including mad cow disease.

14. Ours is not...
Our school is not listed but that doesn't give me much peace about the subject though since our district did stop serving beef when this became public knowledge (and our newspaper acknowledgment that the district's beef came from that supplier).

3. Prion diseases (e.g., mad cow/Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob)
take time to develop and people won't and people wouldn't show symptoms for awhile. The degree to which Bush has decreased safety precautions in our food supplies, beef primary among them, is horrifying.

6. What is totally amazing to me is that this company was able to disperse
so much of this meat into the school system. Was there not one employee there with a conscience? Did they not feel bad about what they were doing?

Obviously the owners didn't care. But shit, what about the workers.

Corporate America has no shame anymore. And apparently neither does a large part of their workforce.

7. Watch the video that caused the recall

You will know the workers didn't care and did what they were told.

9. My daughters' school is listed...
Man, this is scary.

Cold lunches from now on---no exceptions.

This just makes me sick.

Practically every school in our area is listed. How can this be?

Geez. What are we supposed to do? Chances are, that everything is ok, but geez--I'm
a parent and this is really scary. I see the video of those sick cows and it just
makes me so furious and frightened that my child could have ingested that.

Wow.

11. So...this is TWO YEARS worth of bad beef???????
These government documents state, "FNS identified affected States from NSLP
records of beef purchased throughout the two years covered by the recall..."

So this recall is for two years??? This stuff was going on for two years??????

Are they trying to kill us?

17. I don't think they are trying to kill us,
I think they just don't care if we die. Because they have to make money. And if they have to recall the shit they provide for us, they may not make money. And if they have to follow all those pesky regulations and make sure our food is actually SAFE for us, they may not make money. See how simple that is? I think I want to go on an all-dirt diet. Jesus.

16. Lucky you!
Notice, though, that virtually every large school district in the country had this stuff -- Portland and Seattle included. It's amazing to me that a single source provides beef to almost every school district in the country. This is what consolidation brings you.
