Republican Party Responds to Siegelman Release

Birmingham, AL - The Alabama Republican Party is disappointed in today's ruling by the 11th Circuit Court and their decision to release former Governor Don Siegelman pending his appeal of the 6 counts of bribery and the 1 count of obstruction for which he was convicted.

Representative Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party stated "the former Governor's release pending appeal does not change the conviction by a jury of his peers. It would be premature to turn this development into anything other than a formality."

2. You better believe they're disappointed. A lot of THEM are going to jail.
BFEE's taking a hit from at least Rove on down on this.

And didn't the crazy monkey order Mukasey to back off, too?

The wheels of Justice grind slow, but they grind exceeding fine.

Heh heh heh.

3. Quite different from their response to Scooter Libby ---
In United States v. Libby, the jury convicted Libby on four of the five counts in the indictment: one count of obstruction of justice; two counts of perjury; and one count of making false statements to federal investigators.<6> Libby is "the highest-ranking White House official convicted in a government scandal since National Security Adviser John Poindexter in the Iran-Contra affair two decades ago."<7><8>

The presiding trial judge, Reggie B. Walton, sentenced Libby to 30 months in federal prison, a fine of $250,000, and two years of supervised release, including 400 hours of community service,<9><10><11><12> and then ordered Libby to begin his sentence immediately.<13> When Libby's appeal of Judge Walton's order failed, President Bush commuted Libby's 30-month prison sentence, leaving the other parts of his sentence intact.<14><15> In commuting Libby's prison term, Bush stated: "I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison. ... My decision to commute his prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged."<14> After Libby paid his monetary fine and penalty totaling $250,400, Judge Walton queried aspects of the presidential commutation,<12><16> and lawyers filed their briefs supporting Libby's serving supervised release, resolving the issue and thus clearing the way for Libby to begin the rest of his sentence, the two years of supervised release and 400 hours of community service.<17><18>

15. Very cute post from Monopoly (real life monopoly).
Republican justice in action. Glad he has been released. What a dog and pony show. Guess they want to see what the election brings (lose their jobs, etc.).

5. Perhaps he will be the first domino...
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 10:25 PM by Baby Snooks
Hopefully he will appear before the congressional committee and open up the can of worms this administration has kept the lid on. And hopefully he will be the first domino that causes the others to fall finally.

The wonderful thing about our system of government is the checks and balances. And there is a glimmer of hope that in this case, the judicial branch will restore the element of democracy which this administration has discarded.

And maybe Madame Speaker will finally shit or just get off the pot. The American people demand at least the attempt at impeachment of this administration. And if she doesn't do either, hopefully her constituents will throw her off her pot. Her "throne."

I would think this to be a security risk for our citizens. Are they outsourcing our private information to India, Britain or Dubai?

Will they outsource us to their prisons as "domestic terrorists" for not falling in line. Boot click.

19. That would be an affirmative
As they are "disappointed" that although he was taken out of court in shackles, their local newspapers refused to report on the case and the press was forbidden from talking w/him............. they haven't shut him up!

My newest beddy bye thought is that Governor Don Siegelman will be the one that takes down kkkarl rove.

9. Why would some GOP hack say anything remotely related to
the case?

For starters, Siegelman has every legal right this country offers, and for ANY party hack to attempt to smear someone, especially since there is a Congressional Investigation in place about AL politics and alleged GOP influence borders on the insane.

Who cares what the AL GOP says anyway? What are they going to do if the Appeal succeeds, and then, the investigation into AL GOP shows undo influence...will they suddenly all turn themselves in to the local Sheriff's Dept and demand they serve time?

These people are not merely fools, they are craven fools...:eyes:

that anyone should even question them. Deny deny deny until you can distract or change the story. The truth will out unless Pelosi takes justice off the table too.

20. Guy Hunt
That's all that needs to be said. The reason that they were actually able to get an AG elected is because of a public belief that Hunt had been framed, and as time went on, the facts bore that out. The only difference is, with Guy Hunt, there was a statewide elected official that revenge could be taken on, this case was done by federal prosecutors so Siegelman supporters have no one that can take electoral revenge on.

22. ya gotta wonder why
Edited on Fri Mar-28-08 05:53 AM by barbtries
a political party would "respond" to the freeing of a prisoner upon appeal. might it be that said prisoner was a POLITICAL prisoner?

are they giving up all pretense of acting according to the rule of law and letting their twisted politics out in the open for the world to see?

and lastly, why aren't they the ones in prison?

24. Where does a crooked Alabama GOP operative go to run and hide
when he knows he no longer can escape from the glaring eyes of the public? That must be a conundrum, since Alabama would usually be the safest place in the USA for crooked Republicans.
