Dith Pran, ‘Killing Fields’ Photographer, Dies at 65

By DOUGLAS MARTIN
Published: March 31, 2008

Mr. Dith saw his country descend into a living hell as he scraped and scrambled to survive the barbarous revolutionary regime of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979, when as many as two million Cambodians — a third of the population — were killed, experts estimate. Mr. Dith survived through nimbleness, guile and sheer desperation.

3. He's the one who came up with the phrase, "The Killing Fields."
His death is sad, but let us be guided by how he lived.

10. At least he was able to enjoy years of freedom here
though that is not enough to compensate for what he and his family endured.

Great man, great talent. RIP.

4. I had an experience with.. The Killing Felds..
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 09:38 AM by Stuart G
It was in the mid eighties. I had been transferred to a culturally diverse school a couple of years earlier. I was teaching a section on the Holocaust and the class had ended. We were talking about this killing of innocent people for no reason....

A young man came up with a couple of friends. He told me that when he was in Cambodia as a young boy, he and his mother jumped out the back window of their house when the Khmer Rouge came in and killed his father.
