Conservationists Renew Call To Stop Seal Hunt
Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer

Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec (AHN)-- Barely a few hours after the death of three seal hunters, another hunting vessel mishap was reported on the frigid waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, prompting a fresh wave of appeals from conservationists for Canada to call of its annual seal hunt.

According to the Coast Guard, seven seal hunters were forced off the 56-foot vessel, the Annie Marie, as it was taking on water about 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast off the northern tip of Cape Breton.

The incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. The hunters waited on pack ice for a helicopter, which picked them up late Saturday afternoon and transported home to Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec

Navy Lt. Lora Collier said there were no injuries among the sealers.

On the weekend, ice conditions in the Gulf of St. Lawrence remained treacherous, with officials saying they believe there is a record amount squeezing into the gulf.

1. "...hunters are allowed to take up to 275,000 animals this year."
OMG.

I'm not worried about the sealers. I want the seal hunts to stop.

Whatever one thinks of the seal hunt, this loss of human life is tragic.

5. Like any Darwin Award winner, the deaths were totally avoidable.
Do I feel sad if a poacher dies? No.
Do I feel sad if his family starve? Yes.

Similarly, do I feel sad if a seal "hunter" dies? No.
Do I feel sad for the pain felt by his family? Yes.

Do I feel happy that two of their ships have sunk? Damn right.
And the Canadians can't even blame it on Sea Shepherd as it
was their own Coast Guard to blame!

8. You are too cruel.
Are you in favor of the death penalty? Or only the death penalty for these sealers who perished in this accident?

16. Death penalty? Why bring that into it? Their death was self-inflicted.
They had a choice.
They made it.
They opted to profit from slaughtering seal pups.
They suffered the consequences of taking the risks involved.

No need for any hyperbole about "death penalty" ... :eyes:

(FWIW, I'm not in favour of the death penalty - even for sealers or
whalers - but neither do I mourn when they die as a result of their
pursuit of greed.)

14. It takes a "MANLY MAN" to beat a seal pup to death like that
Especially since the "PELT" will sell for mega $$$$ in a fur store.

Disgusting

PS your photo has no blood.

3. Second day of the hunt, second ship lost.
I really do feel terrible for the families of the sealers that died in the first incident.

However, as to the loss of the two vessels, ha ha.

11. I respect living animals whose heads are crushed for no good reason.
I'd respect Canada if it didn't support and encourage such savagery.

15. This is nothing compared to
what the USA is doing in Iraq. Two hundred and seventy thousand seals? Over the course of the last decade, hundreds of thousands (if not more) of Iraqi citizens killed by our sanctions and our bombs.

A boycot would be ridiculous. I may not agree with the seal hunt, I may not look highly upon the morality of those who participate in it, but three dead men does NOT help the case any. There are many more to take up where they left off.

The loss of human life is tragic. People do terrible things, that does not mean that they do not also do great things. One of those who died could have changed the world for the better. I think we should grieve for every life lost needlessly. I don't care whether they were seal clubbers, Nazis, or neo conservatives.
