Canadian Coast Guard Rams Sea Shepherd Ship at Seal Hunt
Source: Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker CCGS Des Groseilliers twice rammed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship Farley Mowat today. The Coast Guard had ordered the Farley Mowat to not approach the area where seals are being slaughtered. When the Farley Mowat did not comply, the Coast Guard rammed the vessel near the port aft stern area. After the Farley Mowat stopped in the ice, the Coast Guard rammed the ship a second time in the same area of the ship causing damage to the plates in that area.

(Please note regular Canadian News outlets will not be covering this aspect of the story, so using the Sea Shepherd reports is the only way to get this information.)

The Coast guard has been flying airplanes and tailing the Farley Mowat. In the same time period, the Coast Guard was responsible for the deaths of 4 sealers when they carelessly towed their boat over ice with the sealers still onboard.

21. Posting grab-asstically large hotlinked images
in threads isn't the best idea. Is there not a scaled-down image that doesn't completely distort the layout?

25. You can disable inline view of images, and display them only when you click through
works great, makes thread cruising much smoother

2. And Sea Shepherd is the "violent extremist" organization.
Ha ha ha...welcome to the jungle, Hearn. International incident...you invited it, then incited it.

I hope Sea Shepherd got the images she needs. Convince the EU to ban seal pelts, and your whole industry can go fuck itself.

6. International incident indeed...the SCCS may lose their national registration for this
Failure to follow orders from the Coast Guard in there national waters is a bad thing

"Watson farted! They'll lose their flag for this!"

Please get to 1K posts before you start repeating yourself. It's just standard procedure on DU, at least outside of GD:P.

13. They have lost their national registration in the past
There has really only been one incident so far this year...it included an illegal boarding. One does wonder when the Dutch maritime authorities are going to act.

23. In case you haven't noticed, they kept right on working.
And that "illegal boarding" involved two unarmed guys with a letter (must be the "dangerous vegans" the Japanese Fisheries Minister was banging on about a year or so back) and resulted in their crew members being taken hostage, so I don't really think the Japanese are planning on pressing the matter.

14. Don't recall Watson doing that.
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 08:20 PM by flvegan
So then, since you "distain idiots who risk lives at sea" you obviously hate the whalers, sealers and all fishermen. I mean, they not only risk their own in search for monetary gain, but they also...you know, kill animals.

"Distain" indeed.

On edit:
BTW, the Nederlands has already banned trade in seal pelts. Doubt they'll be pulling any ship registry, much to your chagrin.

15. The illegal boarding recently comes to mind.
It the gratuitous and unnecessary risk he creates that is the concern.

16. What risk?
I guess he DID risk his own life when he was shot by Japanese whalers.

Illegal boarding? Shit, even Greenpeace does that. No life risk there.

Got nothing = you.

17. What ever became of the so called shooting?
He was going to turn it over to the Australian authorities, but nothing has been heard since. Curious since it did not look like a bullet nor did he respond as if he had been shot.

Illegal boarding is unnecessary risk.

He was even denounced by the IWC at the most recent meeting which then went on to approve Japanese whaling near their home islands next year.

The bubba is a publicity hound who keeps ratcheting things up to stay in the press.

18. Dunno. Guess you'll find out when the rest of the world does.
"the bubba" has done a damn fine job of keeping the issue in the press, which will ulitmately kill the industry.

Again, much to your chagrin, it appears.

28. Animal Planet's press release flatly stated Watson was shot:
Several high-profile and internationally publicized incidents have unfolded since December 2007, including two Sea Shepherd crew members being temporarily held against their will by a Japanese vessel, and yesterday, when Paul Watson was hit with a gunshot, allegedly fired by another Japanese ship. Watson was unharmed in the situation as he was wearing a protective vest.

22. Why waste your time
watsonites are the new conservative.

you can be against whaling and seal hunting, but paul watson has already proven himself to be a racist and a liar of profound proportions. a man who has advocated the slaughter of indigenous people and himself as an advocate of eugenics programs to reduce human population. he's mengele with a fake captain's hat.

talking to watsonites is like trying to talk sense to falwell supporters. it don't happen.

This is not good PR when combined with the footage of hunters not following the new kill rule.

K&R!
