ACLU obtains documents after suit over National Security Letters

The military is using the FBI to skirt legal restrictions on domestic surveillance to obtain private records of Americans' Internet service providers, financial institutions and telephone companies, according to Pentagon documents.

The American Civil Liberties Union expressed outrage at the new revelations, based its conclusion on a review of more than 1,000 documents turned over by the Defense Department after it sued the agency last year for documents related to national security letters, or NSLs, investigative tools used to compel businesses to turn over customer information without a judge's order or grand jury subpoena.

"Newly unredacted documents released today reveal that the Department of Defense is using the FBI to circumvent legal limits on its own NSL power," said the ACLU, whose lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court.

2. You know, this plus the "Justice" Department are bigger threats to Americans...
...than the Iranians will ever be.

I was pondering this over the weekend: illegal-domestic spying coupled with the half-assed Justice Department loaded with neo-con, political appointees will be the downfall of America. We have nothing to fear from Iran when our own corrupt politicians are actively undermining American values.

5. Impeachment would be great, but it is not a punishment that fits the crime.
Accept nothing less than war crime charges.

6. Impeachment is not a punishment in the legal sense.
A sitting President can be indicted and not impeached, or the other way around.

Impeachment simply removes the individual from office and they can subsequently be prosecuted for the same crimes.

7. I just wanted to point out that impeachment means nothing to bush
and cheney. War crimes charges is the only just thing to do.

10. Actually, impeachment doesn't do much of anything by itself.
They've gotta be convicted to get thrown out.

make the Watergate tapes now seem like kindergarten stories. Where do we go from here and how much longer will these infringements and invasions on our freedom and privacy be tolerated. Where are the good guys?
