Shock jock comments about Lumbees labeled racist

By Michael Futch
Staff writer

The N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs has demanded that a Raleigh radio station fire the hosts and producer of a morning show over “racially charged comments” made on the air. The station — WDCG, “G105” — posted an online apology Friday for anyone who was offended by the remarks, which singled out Lumbees and called American Indians “lazy” and “in-bred.”

Members of the Lumbee and other tribes in the state have expressed outrage over the comments made Tuesday during “Bob and the Showgram.” The popular morning program is hosted by longtime Triangle radio air personality Bob Dumas. Derogatory references were made on the air about the names of Pocahontas and Sacajawea. Traditional American Indian music played in the background as the “Showgram” team laughed at their own jokes.

“I think simply, it’s very sad that you would have a radio (station) like that putting that kind of information out on the air,” said Greg Richardson, executive director of the N.C. Commission of Indian Affairs. “It’s inflammatory. I wonder if they understand how inflammatory those remarks can be.”

Richardson, who belongs to the Haliwa-Saponi tribe, said Friday that his office had been “absolutely bombarded” by e-mails and calls complaining about the comments. Recordings of the show have circulated this week by e-mail. “I’ve never encountered anything like that before,” he said. “I thought we were beyond that. This is 2008. I think people should have more respect than to get involved in a discussion like that on the air.”

she got sick and tired of his racist, misogynistic jokes and left? Am I remembering that correctly?
I think he almost made her cry on the air or something.

3. Not a surprise that this happened.
Unfortunately, the jackass will probably not be fired. He's been on the air for years and has had numerous offensive episodes. I think the most he's received is a temporary suspension. I hope it's different this time. He's a huge asshole. I quit listening to even one song on the station over 10 years ago because of him.

I'm surprised there's still a market for "shock jocks." But I guess there will always be that audience of the terminally adolescent. I suspect most of the show's "advertising" is really "trades" too.

We don't need that crap being promoted. It only divides Americans by spreading ignorance and misinformation about groups of people who are different than one another ethnically.

10. This is ridiculous.....
I mean, has anyone seen any stand-up comedy recently? Some of the most common subjects are the difference in cultures and stereotypes. The truth of the matter is, stereotypes wouldn't exist without the "bad apples" who provide them. That goes with any race. I have known extremely dorky white people, white people who live in trailers and sleep with there cousins. I have known black people who sag their pants, carry guns, and steal. I know mexicans that will work for almost anything, slick their hair back, and spray paint the virgin mary on the hoods of their cars. I know native americans who are full blown alcoholics. In addition to these people, I have known many more of each race to be contributing members, and pillars of the community and society.

The point is: Yes, there are some differences between cultures. No, it's not everyone.

*Attention*

White people (or European Americans if you really want to be PC about it (but you never hear that term)), are some of the most discriminated people around. I for one, take these comments with "a grain of salt," and move on.

These people aren't dumb. They all have college educations, and they all have had different experiences in their lifetimes. The people who are dumb are the people who think that stereotypes are the general view of the public (and anyone in the general public who thinks that way).

Has there been inbreeding in the tribe?

Are there lazy members?

I'm half polish, and half irish. I'll be the first to tell you that there are some serious "kid popping" drunks in ireland. In addition to that, I have the foresight to realize that it's not everone, the self image to know that it's not me, and the tolerence to not care if anyone jests at those few.

Isn't it stupid that people can't say certain things if they aren't of a certain heritage?

This argument would be valid if they said these things in malice, with the specific intent to harm members of the lumbee tribe.

They did not have those intentions.

My family (both sides) came over here in the early 1900's. Almost 40 years after slavery was abolished. Still, people look at me as the white man holding them back. Also, it's crazy that people are pissed off about things that didn't even happen to them! They happened to their ancestors!

Do the Germans still owe the Jews land or money for the holocaust?

How about the egyptians who enslaved the jews? They still owe 'em?

How about England? Do they owe me the land they stole from my Irish ancestors 2 centuries ago?

I dont think so. I have been afforded enough opportunity here to make my own way. Plus, like I said, it didn't happen to me, it happened to people that of which I never met, that happen to be in my bloodline.

I'm not saying that what they said is right. I'm not saying that it's wrong either. My argument is that I don't think we should over-analize something that was said in jest and clearly without malice.

11. Do you live in the area?
If you don't then you have no idea what an asshole this guy is. There are many more instances of disgusting behavior on his part. He has demonstrated a pattern of bigotry, misogyny, and homophobia. He is completely vile and should be off the air.

I just heard on WRAL news that he is off the air until Monday. I knew nothing would really happen to him. They love the controversy.

12. bob and the showgram
What a bunch of hypocrits! You persecute Bob for making comments about people and then some of you start calling him names and saying derogatory things about him and the others on his station! What is allowing you to do that is a little thing called freedom of speech. If you do not listen to the show then how do you know who he talks about and what he says? You got a few snippets from the other media that take everything out of context, that's how. One of you even said that ALL of his listeners are "adolescents"! Well, I'm 38 years old and you have insulted me! I think I'll sue YOU for 5 million bucks! How dare you speak of me when you don't know me! See how easy it is to lump people into one category or "stereotype"? All this political correctness and inability to laugh and get over something is making me ashamed to be a democrat. Just the turn the dial to another station and get a life!

21. Excuse me!?!
Where did I say one damn thing about anyone other than Bob Dumas? I said nothing about his listeners. However, your post did confirm what I think of most of them. If you had any reading comprehension skills you'd see my previous post where I mentioned that I stopped listening to the station. That implies that I used to listen. I listened to the showgram until the jerk kept getting more and more disgusting and I stopped listening. Freedom of speech allows me to say what I think of him and to say that I think he should be off the air. The difference is I did not stereotype and say all red-headed white men are redneck assholes. I said a specific one is an asshole. For the record, I'm 36 years old and I could really give a damn if I insulted you or not. I've been here since 2004 but notice you just joined today. I think you've made a wrong turn somewhere. You probably think Imus was wronged as well.

16. I do...
Yes, I do live in the area. I agree with you that he's an
asshole. I don't work at the FCC, so I'm not qualified, and I
don't have the credentials to make the call of whether to fire
him or not. It's a show. That is all. So what if he is
vile? Turn the channel.

Many other shows have similar "shock" innuendoes....

Southpark, Family Guy, just about any stand-up comedy act,
etc....

Should those shows be canceled as well?

Again, it's a matter of being selective. Are you willing to
sacrifice a principle to single out one entity?

So much of this world is taboo. For everyone one who is
disgusted, there is at least one other person who embraces
this type of comedy. The envelope will always be pushed my
friends. A sense humor is invaluable, in addition to a sense
of one's self.

31. Southpark, Comedy Central, etc., do not use public airwaves
They're broadcast through cable systems, which is very different from radio broadcasting.

So, yeah, the FCC DOES have a role in these matters.

14. "white people who live in trailers and sleep with there cousins."
Excuse me, but what is wrong with white people who live in trailers? I live in a trailer, aka, mobile home, but I don't sleep with my cousin. And it is "their cousins," not "there cousins." Learn some grammar.

15. wow....
I extend my congratulations to you on your home and your
forking family tree.

This is exactly what I’m talking about. I'm sure nothing is
wrong with your family tree or your trailer. It's a
stereotype!!! Some people do!

....and then you want to attack my grammar?!

That was a pretty large post I authored, and the only
"constructive criticism" and rebuttal you have for
it concerns whether I used the proper conjugation of there,
their, or they're in one of my sentences?!?! Really?!?!

That is pathetic! But since we're on the subject, I'll return
the favor....

Let's see....

1. There are two spaces after every sentence. Not one.
2. Abbreviations such as "aka" are to be written
with periods (A.K.A.).
3. According to MLA format, one may not begin a sentence with
the word "and."

....so before you go correcting my grammar on a freaking'
blog, make sure you can provide something relevant to the
discussion before making yourself look like a total ass.

30. ok....
Thank you. I get it. I make mistakes sometimes. I am truely sorry. My point was that it's just a blog, and that correcting the grammar and spelling of a blog is silly. He or she pointing out my misusage of the word "there" was an attempted attack on my intelligence. Please, lets not get too carried away with this, and try to continue to discuss the real topic at hand......

20. One of us?
If by "one of us," you mean a member of the lumbee tribe, you are absolutely correct. That I am not. I think I made that clear when I stated I'm half Irish, half Polish.

If you mean that I'm not a dem, you're wrong. I just happen to be indifferent on this issue. I see both sides of the argument. I guess I've just been desensitized.

I respect all of your opinions, and I encourage them. This debate is a healthy one. But since my identity seems to now be in question, I will be extremely forthright.....

My name is Sergeant Brian Duffy. I am from Chicago. I am a graduate of Indiana University. I've been stationed at Ft. Bragg for the past four years. I was quizzical about the purpose of the war, but now that I've actually spent over a year in Iraq, and seen what goes on, I am absolutely for an immediate troop withdrawal. I am open to any unbiased, open minded, discussion on any topic. You all can feel free to reach me via email if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

brian.e.duffy@us.army.mil

I find it odd that people preaching about equality would attack me and/or my opinions and character. I'm not here to pick fights. I wish only to share my views (if anyone even cares to hear them), and listen to the views of others. My mind is open. So are my ears and eyes.

I imagine this type of humor would attract the lowest common denominators...

Personally, I find stereotyping offensive, therefore I don't listen to radio (as it's either top 40 or shock radio).

However, many times we'll find that the most malicious statements have been made "only in jest..."

Anyway-- isn't the entire point of shock radio to offend?
