31 Others Wounded As Rockets Strike Baghdad's Green Zone And Base In Rustamiyah

BAGHDAD, April 6, 2008

(CBS/AP) The U.S. military says rocket or mortar attacks against the U.S.-protected Green Zone and a military base elsewhere in Baghdad have killed three American service members and wounded 31.

A military official says two U.S. troops were killed and 17 wounded when rockets struck the Green Zone in central Baghdad.

The official says another American service member died and 14 were wounded in another attack on a military base in the southeastern area of Rustamiyah.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authorization to release the information.

The attacks come amid fierce clashes between Shiite militia fighters and U.S.-Iraqi forces.

1. Note where these deaths occurred
"when rockets struck the Green Zone in central Baghdad"

"in another attack on a military base in the southeastern area of Rustamiyah"

We are totally f***ed.

They are coming to us, now. No fear, no respect.

We are truly screwn. No way can it get any better now.

4. I'm no military genius, but it doesn't take one to figure out that we are in deep shit...
3 soldiers killed in a mortar/rocket attack on our single stronghold in Iraq is not the same as them being blown up by IED while on patrol, is it now?

We are now hunted, trapped sitting ducks.

Isn't that obvious?

US forces are under siege. The trebuchets and catapults will lay waste to our fortifications. Next they'll be lobbing dead cows over the battlements!

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Three U.S. soldiers were killed and 31 others were wounded in two separate rocket attacks Sunday afternoon in Baghdad, the U.S. military told CNN.

An indirect attack involving a “couple of rounds” of fire on the International Zone, also known as the Green Zone, killed two soldiers and wounded 17 others at about 3:30 p.m., a military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information. The official declined to give the specific location of the attack or where the rocket struck for security reasons.

A separate attack about 30 minutes earlier killed one soldier and wounded another 14 at a U.S. military outpost in Rustamiya, in southeastern Baghdad, the military said.

18. couple of rounds? bullshit
and the NYT article I linked to clearly indicates that the 'separate attack' was our forces going out to suppress the rocket barrage and getting our asses handed back to us.

Three U.S. soldiers were killed and 31 others wounded in two rocket attacks Sunday afternoon in Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

An attack involving a "couple of rounds" of fire on the International Zone, also known as the Green Zone, killed two soldiers and wounded 17 others about 3:30 p.m., a military official said, declining to give the specific location of the attack for security reasons.

A separate attack about 30 minutes earlier killed one soldier and wounded 14 at a U.S. military outpost in Rustamiya in southeastern Baghdad, the military said.

Sunday's fatalities bring the death toll of U.S. troops in the Iraq war to 4,022. Nearly 30,000 others have been wounded in action.

Earlier Sunday, fighting between U.S. troops and the Mehdi Army militia loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr left at least 20 dead and 52 wounded in Baghdad's Sadr City, according to an Iraqi Interior Ministry official.

16. Many of us predicted this YEARS ago- ultimately, Iran will be blamed so DICK can get his war on.
Fish in a barrel, that's what our troops are and the PTB KNEW it all along
and planned to use it as their reason to attack Iran.

17. NYT has a somewhat DIFFERENT story. WTF?
BAGHDAD — Sharp fighting broke out in the Sadr City district of Baghdad on Sunday as American and Iraqi troops sought to control neighborhoods used by Shiite militias to fire rockets and mortars into the nearby Green Zone.

But the operation failed to stop the attacks on the heavily fortified zone, headquarters for Iraq’s central government and the American Embassy here. By day’s end, at least two American soldiers had been killed and 17 wounded in the zone, one of the worst daily tolls for the American military in the most heavily protected part of Baghdad. Altogether, at least three American soldiers were killed and 31 wounded in attacks in Baghdad on Sunday, and at least 20 Iraqis were killed, mostly in Sadr City.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/07/world/middleeast/07iraq.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

If I am reading this correctly, the green zone was bombarded in a devastating attack that killed two and wounded 17, we sent out a force to suppress the attacks, which marched into an ambush where 14 more soldiers were wounded and one killed. Sunday was a cluster fuck and the militias in Sadr City scored an impressive victory. My guess is that we are about to bomb the crap out of the district as we seem to be unable to control things on the ground. Not good at all, not for us and not for the Iraqis, who will undoubtedly pay the usual 10-for-1 price.

More of the same? Vote McLame.
