US Evangelist Gives $6 Million to Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) — American evangelist John Hagee announced donations of $6 million to Israeli causes on Sunday and said that Israel must remain in control of all of Jerusalem.

Hagee, a Christian Zionist who has been in the spotlight lately for endorsing presidential candidate John McCain and criticizing the Catholic Church, brought hundreds of backers on a solidarity trip to Israel.

Hagee and his group, Christians United for Israel, joined keynote speaker Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel's hard-line opposition Likud Party, at a rally in support of Jerusalem remaining united and under Jewish control.

"Turning part or all of Jerusalem over to the Palestinians would be tantamount to turning it over to the Taliban," Hagee told an audience filled with Americans who waved Israeli flags and cheered.

NEW YORK (AP) — The leader of the largest branch of American Judaism said Wednesday that synagogues in the movement shouldn't work with the Rev. John Hagee, a Christian Zionist, calling him an "extremist" on Israeli policy who disparages other faiths.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the liberal Union for Reform Judaism, said Hagee and his group, Christians United For Israel, reject any Israeli land concessions to achieve peace with the Palestinians.

Reform Judaism supports creating a Palestinian state; Hagee sees a biblical mandate for the territory so End Times prophecy can be fulfilled.

Yoffie also condemned Hagee's views on Roman Catholicism and Islam. The San Antonio pastor has suggested that Catholic anti-Semitism shaped Adolf Hitler, among other comments.

"We do not seek to tell Israelis what to do," Pastor John Hagee told a group of reporters Monday, following claims made last week by the president of the Union for Reform Judaism suggesting that he and his organization, Christians United for Israel, were a threat to the country's security.

Speaking from Israel, Hagee addressed a group of reporters in a joint conference call organized following statements made by Rabbi Eric Yoffie, who spoke at the annual convention of Central Conference of American Rabbis in Ohio. He urged Reform rabbis to distance themselves from Christian Zionists and targeted Hagee in particular for comments he made about Catholics, Muslims and his rejection of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"In making this allegation, Yoffie ignores CUFI's record of activism," said Hagee. "Instead he relies on a few quotes from me and others pulled out of context."

"When it comes to issue of land for peace, it is true that I and other Christian Zionists have grown skeptical after watching the results of the withdrawal from South Lebanon and Gaza, but CUFI's philosophy has been that Israelis - and they alone - have the right to make existential decisions about land and peace," Hagee continued.

To the extent that CUFI has taken "concrete action," Hagee said it has been "limited to asking the White House not to pressure Israel into making territorial concessions that she does not wish to make."
