Bush Says Economy Is Poised to Rebound
Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON — President Bush urged Congress on Monday to resist efforts by Democrats to pass a second economic stimulus package, saying that while the economy is “in a rough time right now,” he is confident it will begin to rebound by the end of the year.

On his first day back from a swing through Eastern Europe and Russia, Mr. Bush summoned small-business leaders to the White House to showcase the first stimulus package, signed into law in February. That package included rebates for taxpayers — the White House says the checks will start to go out next month — and tax incentives intended to encourage businesses to invest.

Mr. Bush urged lawmakers to give the law a chance to work before passing a new one. “Give this one a chance to kick in,” he said.

But in the wake of a bleak report on Friday that showed 80,000 jobs were lost in March, Democrats say there is no time to waste. The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi of California, has called on Mr. Bush to work with Congress in passing a new stimulus bill and has said she will raise the issue with Mr. Bush directly at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday at the White House.

We thought that no one could fix the mess Bush the first made, but then Clinton came along. So yeah, once Bushboy II leaves things have a good chance of improving!

46. During the Great Depression
it was a big slogan. "Prosperity Is Just Around The Corner"

http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/wall_street_crash.htm

"What did the government do?

The president was a Republican, Herbert Hoover. He believed that if you were in trouble you should help yourself and not expect others to help you. This he called "rugged individualism". Therefore he did not do a great deal to help those out of work.

"It is not the function of the government to relieve individuals of their responsibilities to their neighbours, or to relieve private institutions of their responsibilities to the public."
Hoover.

Hoover did not believe that the depression would last - "Prosperity is just around the corner" is what he said to businessmen in 1932 when things were just about at their worst. Squalid cardboard campsites were created in cities to live in...called "Hoovervilles". The nick-name of the soup given out by charities for the unemployed was "Hoover stew".

However, Hoover did do some good. Money was used to create jobs to build things such as the Hoover Dam. In 1932 he gave $300 million to the states to help the unemployed (Emergency Relief and Reconstruction Act) but it had little impact as states run by the Republicans believed in "rugged individualism" more than Hoover did and they used only $30 million of the money offered to them.

Many saw Hoover’s attempts as being "too little too late".

In the November 1932 election, Hoover was heavily defeated by the Democrat candidate. This man had promised the American public a "New Deal". His name was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Thirteen years of Republican rule had come to an end."

He is mocking the commons. It may get traction among that part of his base that is
unmonied and ignorant - but the educated whether they are conservative business elites or
progressives understand it's bullshit. Bush uses language albeit clumsily, in the manner
recommended by Leo Strauss.

THE GREATEST CLARITY IS A CONTRADICTION

For the uninitiated, "contradiction" is the key to the Straussian approach, and more than anything else it defines the Bush regime and its circle of influentials. The contradictory and absurd statements of George W. Bush need not be listed here. His collected solecisms have been published in multiple volumes and are scattered throughout the Internet. Donald Rumsfeld's most inscrutable utterances have even been set in verse. Such deformations of the English language are no accident: they reflect the administration's general pattern of communication

ALL MEN ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL

William Kristol has written that "Strauss, chiefly by way of his students, is in large part responsible for making the thought and principles of America's founders a source of political knowledge and appeal, and for making political excellence more broadly a subject of appreciation and study." America's founders thought it self-evident that all men are created equal, and yet increasing inequality has been the hallmark of the Bush Administration, as it was of the Reagan and Clinton administrations. Donald Rumsfeld's primary task under Ronald Reagan was to rid the country of the Great Society programs of the early 1960s. Irving Kristol, an early Straussian, advised Reagan and Rumsfeld and their staffs of the need to stop coddling hungry children, educating the poor, and helping the aged, the infirm, victims of prejudice. The current Bush Ad ministration works more boldly toward inequality. It has adopted a tax system suggested by Grover Norquist, another Straussian, a man who publicly compared the inheritance tax to the Holocaust.

Robert Maynard Hutchins, the founder of the Great Books program, said, "The best education for the best is the best education for all." In 1959, Strauss wrote that "Liberal education is the necessary endeavor to found an aristocracy within democratic mass society+" In one sentence he had stated his elitism and his distaste for what he called the vulgarity of democratic society. Three years later he made the ruling elite permanent: "We must not expect that liberal education can ever become universal education. It will always remain the obligation and the privilege of a minority." Arrogance follows elitism, it leads to cruelty, the capability, perhaps even the desire, to use people, to make them into things. No follower of Strauss can agree with Kant's description of human dignity: man is not a means but an end in himself. The Straussians assign dignity to the few, and those who are deprived of dignity cannot pursue happiness. The study of Strauss's work does lead to thinking about the Founders: not how they would agree with the Straussians but how they would oppose them.

45. Rebound?
The correct term is dead cat bounce. There will be a warm fuzzy glow, as murcans cash their rebate checks (the ones our grandchildren will be paying for). Then when the money is spent, and we're still spending more than our paychecks for skyrocketing food and energy, the reality hangover begins.

Did I also mention our granchildren are responsible for the Bear Sterns failed investments? But hey, that's only a few billion.
