This statement just in from Air America chair Charlie Kireker and president Mark Green:

Last week Air America suspended Randi Rhodes for abusive, obscene language at a recent public appearance in San Francisco which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station.

Air America Media was informed last night by Ms. Rhodes that she has chosen to terminate her employment with the company. We wish her well and thank her for past services to Air America.

We will soon announce exciting new talent and programming that will accelerate Air America’s growth in the future.

I'm sure you're all aware of the statement Randi made to a couple of people reporting on the issue last week that AAR had breached her contract. She didn't make that statement cause they were about to fire her, she made that contract to let people know that she was now free to leave. I'm glad that she'll be on Green 960, and if my local progressive station (AM 1090 in Seattle) doesn't pick her up, I'll stream her online from the Green 960 website. (Update: I just heard back from Paul Fredricks, the program director for AM 1090 and he said "We will see where she resurfaces and do what we can to get her back on
KPTK." Excellent. At least Am 1090 knows what it's doing. They picked Malloy up when he started broadcasting on Nova M too.)

I was able to send an email to [e-mail] and it hasn't been bounced back to me, so I'm assuming she's still getting mail. I can't wait to hear her show on Monday. Quite frankly, I might even listen to Sam today to hear his reaction... even though that would mean streaming AAR since my local affiliate doesn't carry what was The Randi Rhodes Show on Air America Radio live.

I've been listening to Thom Hartmann on 1090 this morning, and there was a caller who asked him something about the Randi situation and he kinda blew off said caller, then said a few moments later that he was upset about the situation, but didn't want to talk about other shows on the station. I don't think he's being censored cause I've hung out with Thom and he's a pretty classy guy who doesn't gossip.

Sadly, AAR is doomed. The Young Turks (theyoungturks.com if you aren't a member; they're doing their own thing in conjunction with Brave New Films) left in January, they were my favorite addition to AAR and I was sad to have them leave. Maddow, I predict will have her own show on MSNBC by the end of the year (September would be a good time for that...). And then, all that will be left aside from the hour of Laura Flanders (new management totally schtupped her) on Sundays, will be Thom Hartmann and *shudder* Lionel. Yeah... we really want the progressive name in broadcasting to be Lionel. How did that guy get a show anyway? He's the epitome of the Right's caricature of liberals. After all of this, I will have mixed feelings if AAR goes tits up... on the one hand they totally deserved it after the way they treated their on-air talent... but on the other hand Bill-O will be IMPOSSIBLE to shut up about it. The only thing more annoying than what the AAR management has been doing will be the cheerful way in which O'Rly will gloat about how "liberal talk can't survive in the free market" or whatever. Oy.

I hope she gets a gig where she can actually say what she thinks. I hope to god that AAR succeeds and I hope Nova-M is an overwhelming success. And I hope there are others in the wings on the rise. Enjoy the change. I wish Randi well on Nova-M, that her numbers soar and Nova-M becomes a household word. And I hope Mark Green finds the synergy he's looking for and builds the greatest of radio networks.
