E Street Band's Danny Federici dies
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Thursday, April 17th 2008, 9:51 PM

Danny Federici, the longtime keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen whose stylish work helped define the E Street Band sound on hits from “Hungry Heart” through “The Rising,” has died. He was 58.

Federici, who had battled melanoma for three years, died Thursday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. News of his death was posted late Thursday night on Springsteen’s official Web site, www.brucespringsteen.net.

According to published reports, Federici last performed with Springsteen and the band last month, appearing during portions of a March 20 show in Indianapolis. Springsteen concerts scheduled for Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Saturday in Orlando were postponed following the news of Frederici’s death.

It was Federici, along with original E Street Band drummer Vini Lopez, who first invited Springsteen to join their band.

:( RIP Danny, you rocked. A very under-rated musician, but a HUGE part of The Boss's sound. God speed...

13. Video of his last performance
The link is here http://www.brucespringsteen.net/news/index.html of him doing "Sandy" with Bruce just a month ago.

The end is very touching. I think they knew it was going to be his final performance.

Poor Bruce. Danny's family has the best pizza place in NJ that I grew up eating. So sad.

18. Is that his family's place in Freehold?
I thought he was from farther west.

Or maybe you're thinking of another place, anyway.

19. Yep
I always heard that it was the same Federicis. But I could be wrong. It's not like there aren't tons of myths and legends surrounding Bruce in Freehold. Great pizza nonetheless.

And a great musician of course.

22. Yes, been there a few times growing up myself
Going to parochial school, my friends came from all over Monmouth Cty. A number of them from Freehold. Although I have to say, growing up we just took good pizza for granted. Move away from the greater NJ/NY area, and it becomes a real crapshoot, doesn't it?

23. Don't even get me started about finding a decent bagel
I'm in PA now so what was once a given is a delicacy. It's wonderful to find pizza that is just similar to home.

24. LOL, yes!
Going to school in PA, bagels were something you just had to bring from home. They simply didn't exist otherwise. (Dating myself, I know).

I laugh now, b/c there's a contingent in CT that thinks real pizza comes from New Haven. Picture me with one eyebrow raised here.

I also laugh, b/c our local bagel place is run by Italians, I think. I just bought some this morning. At home, chances are good you weren't going to get a bagel during Passover. Now it's just regular American cuisine - albeit greatly varying in quality!

The E Street Band will never be the same again. He was far, far too young!

21. Really sad to hear this news today
Just saw Bruce in Seattle 2 weeks ago and he said that Danny was doing okay and hoped to be at more shows. I don't know if I'll ever be able to listen to "Sandy" again after seeing that Indianapolis video.

Adios "Phantom" Dan Federici
