North Carolina Democratic debate canceled
Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:15pm EDT
By Paul J. Gough

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Katie Couric won't get her debate after all.

After several weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations with the campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the North Carolina Democratic Party said Monday it was canceling plans for an April 27 debate that would have aired on CBS following "60 Minutes."

Clinton had immediately agreed to the debate, which would have been held in Raleigh, but Obama's camp wanted to wait until after Tuesday's primary in Pennsylvania. But the logistical questions and concerns had become so great that the debate couldn't continue without a commitment from Obama.

That leaves hanging CBS News and Couric, who had staked out a claim to this debate and had given prime TV real estate -- following "60 Minutes" -- in order to assure the debate. An earlier attempt to hold a debate with Couric and "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer last December in Los Angeles was canceled due to the writers strike.

"You have shown tremendous passion and interest in being a part of history as Democrats are poised this year to elect the first female or African-American president," the party said in a statement. "However, there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity."

2. It's just as well. The Networks are CLEARLY not up to the job.
If the League of Women Voters were running it, I'd encourage both campaigns to participate.

Catie or the future of the primary.

12. A good idea since the last debate focused on trashing a candidate
rather than talking about the issues.

14. Awwww...I was looking forward to some national attention here in NC
Although if Clinton does manage to win in PA, maybe NC will be the State that clinches the nomination for Obama.....I would be happy with that. I thoroughly expect a blow-out for Obama here...his yard signs seem to be poppin' up everywhere.

17. Don't forget to vote early!
Open now through May 3rd, the so-called "one stop absentee voting" is at the locations listed at the BoE website.

18. What is the benefit of voting early?
We had planned to just go over to the polling place on election day, but if there is some reason we should do it early I'd like to know. Thanks....

20. So you can take part in the many GOTV activities
that we will need to do on election day.

Also, the lines are much shorter, unless you happen to go on a day and time when a mass of people are voting early. And it means that you can vote when it's convenient for you, and that some random chance event won't prevent you from voting on election day.

But the main benefit for activists is that it frees up our time for other things on election day. I'm going to do it here in Durham at our BoE later this week. :hi:

21. I see, problem for me is I'm in Mecklenburg County and we have only electronic voting here
no paper ballots. Not sure early voting is valid in this county, and if it is, not sure how "safe" it is to vote early on an electronic voting machine. Not sure how safe it is to use an electronic voting machine on election day either though. I'll look into it though.

24. It should be secure
Or at least as secure as electronic voting can be. According to the Mecklenburg BoE, several hundred people have voted already, though strangely only the votes at the CPCC - CENTRAL CAMPUS have been reported. I'd vote there. The other 16 sites have reported zero votes as of the 18th, which I find hard to believe.

Here in Durham, we use optical scan paper ballots, 100% verifiable and recountable.
